Lewis, Mayor w WASHINGTON 25 West Main Street * Auburn WA 98001-4998 * www.auburnwa.gov * 253-931-3000 CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION MEETING Meeting Minutes of December 12, 2006 The regularly scheduled meeting of the Civil Service Commission was held December 12, 2006, in Resource Room #2 located on the second floor of Auburn City Hall, 25 West Main Street, Auburn, WA. The following members were in attendance. MEMBERS PRESENT: Dick Kammeyer, Chairman; Cyril Van Selus, Member; Chuck Booth, Member STAFF PRESENT: Chief of Public Safety Jim Kelly; Deputy Fire Chief Mike Gerber; Assistant City Attorney, Joe Beck; and Gail Solberg, Civil Service Examiner ACTION: Chairman Kammeyer called the meeting to order at 3:30 p.m. Approval of November 14, 2006 Civil Service meeting minutes. Minutes were accepted as written. COMMISSION POLICE DEPARTMENT Solberg reported that with our continuous recruiting process of entry-level police we have seven oral board interviews scheduled for December 13, 2006 and we also have twelve new candidates scheduled to take the written test on December 14, 2006. We have multiple candidates in the background process and we are also in the process of contracting with additional background investigators to conduct police candidate backgrounds. Chief Kelly reported that the Council approved five supernumery (additional) positions to fill in 2007 and anticipate additional positions to be approved in 2008. Currently we have four open Police Officer positions. Chief Kelly updated the Commission that effective January 1, 2007 we are adding a second Assistant Chief position that will be filled by Larry Miller; Steve Stocker will be promoted to Commander; and Brian Williams will be promoted to Sergeant. FIRE DEPARTMENT Solberg report that the entry-level firefighter list expires December 16, 2006 and is eligible for another six-month extension. Chuck Booth moved to extend the entry-level firefighter list for another six months; Cyril Van Selus seconded; the motion was approved and carried. AUBURN ~ MORE THAN YOU IMAGINED Solberg report that the VRFA (Valley Regional Fire Authority) has agreed to operate under the Auburn Firefighters CBA which will include the use of the Auburn Civil Service Commission. The City of Pacific has four full-time firefighters and the City of Algona does not have any firefighters. Gerber explained that there is no action needed from the Commission. Starting the January Civil Service meeting they will report as the VRFA. Beck explained that the VRFA plan has been adopted by the voters (and the City) and part of the plan includes continuing to use Auburn's Civil Service Commission in the same manner. ADJOURNMENT: There being no further business to come before the Commission, the meeting adjourned at 3:50 p.m. cc: Commission Members Mayor Peter B.
