CALL TO ORDER Chair Lynn Norman called the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers located on the first floor of Auburn City Hall, 25 West Main Street, Auburn, WA. Committee Members present were: Chair Lynn Norman, Member Sue Singer and Member Gene Cerino. Staff present included: Mayor Pete Lewis, Planning, Building & Community Director Cindy Baker, Assistant Planning Director Kevin Snyder, Public Works Director Dennis Dowdy, Economic Development Manager Dave Baron, and Permits & Admin Manager Darcie Hanson. Audience Members present were: Troy Humphrey and Ronnie Roberts. II. MINUTES Member Cerino moved to approve the August 6, 2008, August 12, 2008 and September 3, 2008 minutes as read; Member Singer seconded. The minutes were approved as submitted unanimously. III. DISCUSSION A. Historical Downtown Ideas/Photos Greg Watson provided a historical presentation, Auburn Comes Together. Mr. Watson is a teacher at West Auburn High School. The presentation focused on several points of historical matter and ideas that could be incorporated into Auburn's downtown development. Mr. Watson is an expert on Auburn's Native American way of life, Japanese farming culture and the Northern Clay Co. Gladding McBean. Mr. Watson spoke about the coincidence of the downtown development project being called Auburn Junction; Ilalqo, which means junction, is what Native Americans called the Auburn area where the Green and the White Rivers met here at one point. Mr. Watson pointed out this was a great coincidence of history reinventing itself. Chair Norman asked staff to send a copy of Mr. Watson's presentation to Spencer Alpert. B. The Downtown Sidewalk Standards are deferred to the October 28, 2008 meeting. C. Member Singer suggested that the City try to purchase terracotta/clay removed from old buildings before demolition. D. Committee mentioned the circular intersection designs/plazas that are planned for Page 1 Downtown Redevelopment Committee Minutes October 14, 2008 Division/Main, 1St/Division, and 2"d/Division. This will be discussed at the next meeting. IV. INFORMATION A. Mayor Lewis attended the recent meeting of the Auburn Downtown Association. He reported that the ADA and Chamber of Commerce are re-engaging. Fields and Company should be open in December. Chair Norman distributed a Seattle Times article on WPA buildings. The old library building qualifies. B. Downtown Auburn talking points will be discussed at the next meeting. V. ADJOURNMENT The next meeting will be on October 28, 2008 in the Council Conference Room. There being no further business to come before the Downtown Redevelopment Committee, Chair Norman adjourned the meeting at 4:55 pm.
