A. PSE Presentation on Power Line Tree Replacement Program
As we previously discussed, PSE has a program in place to remove trees that are in their
powerlines and they will replace these trees with appropriate species that will not prove
troublesome in the future. There are several areas in the Auburn area which would
benefit from this program. The Engineering Department has been inventorying areas
where sidewalks are buckled by the trees in the parking strips and planning their removal
and replacement.
Ryan Lakin explained that he works for Asplundh, who have the contract with PSE to
maintain trees growing under the power lines. The utility encourages people to plant the
right tree in the right place, and they will pay up to $25.00 for replacement trees in areas
where inappropriate trees can cause damage or interrupt service. Their practice is to
move away any branches near the power line that might cause problems to their ability
to provide service; this can mean tunneling through the tree if it is a large species
growing into the powerlines.
Asplundh's maintenance schedule lets them go through a neighborhood every four to six
years. Twenty-five percent of their employees are ISA certified, and they receive safety
training from the IBEW. They maintain a small nursery in which they grow °under
powerline friendly trees", where they grow some Hedge Maples and some Crab Apple
trees.
Periodicals are available through PSE to help with our education program. Other
materials are available through ISA and The Arbor Day Society. The replacement
program may be beneficial to neighborhoods and extend the money we have available
for planting. We will be coordinating with the Public Works Department on this project.
