PRAB Conference Room
I. Call to Order
Those members present were Len Elliott, Lonnie Sundal, Trish Borden and Marion Nancarrow.
Judith Whiteley was absent. Also in attendance were Parks Planning and Development
Manager Dan Scamporlina, City Horticulturalist Kirk Hadley, and Secretary Ann Fuqua.
II. Minutes of the December meeting were approved; there was no meeting in January and no
quorum in February.
III. Correspondence/Public Input
We have received a note from a lady who was concerned that the red cedars near the White
River trail were poisonous to horses. Dan checked with a veterinarian and he said that horses
would avoid this plant if they were well fed; if they are just browsing, they will not take a
second bite. He sent his findings to the resident; the only horse trail is on the White River,
and neither Dan nor Kirk is aware of red cedars along that trail.
There was some concern about the cedars near the Peasley Canyon gateway. We have
checked them out; the trees are stressed from all the wet weather, but they are not dying.
They are currently six to eight feet, and will adapt to their planting conditions as they get
older.
IV. Old Business
A. Update on Significant Tree Status
Mr. Elliott has tried several times to reach the people on Pike Street with the tree we
would like to recognize as a significant tree, but he has not heard back from them. It
was decided to go ahead with another selection. If the residents on Pike Street decide
to go ahead, we will have a second recognizable tree too. Ms. Borden suggested the
tree on the grounds at the Adventist Accademy. Ms. Sundall -had pictures of two trees
she thought significant, one on `~J" Street NE and a second at 2"d and R Streets NE.
Members and staff will take a look at the other three trees and we can make a selection
next month.

B. Update on Les Gove Park Tree Inventory
Kirk reported that he was waiting for the next photo fly-over for a GSI chart of the park.
This would allow him to identify the species of trees on a current identification source,
which would then be made up for people to do a walking tour.
V. New Business
A. Arbor Day Tree Selection and Planting Site
Arbor Day is April 12th and we will be meeting at approximately 10:00 a.m. that day.
Discussion took place related to the tree selected previously as part of the Arbor Day
celebration; last year was an elm, and before that a zacovia. Mr. Elliott asked about
selecting a fir tree this year instead of a deciduous variety, and the group decided on a
Grand Fir. Kirk will check with Furneys Wholesale Nursery, as they have been very
helpful in past years finding us find well established trees at a reasonable price. The
Garden Club will purchase the tree as one of their projects; we will again place it in Les
Gove Park. The variety of species in the park is very diverse and interesting, and will
add to the interest of the walking tour planned when the map is complete.
B. Clean Sweep
Clean Sweep is scheduled for May 12, 2007. The day will begin with a pancake
breakfast, followed by the ceremonial sweep down Main Street. This year will be a little
different in that we will have one large project instead of a number of small ones
throughout the City. Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad has donated $35,000 to
purchase approximately 1200 English Laurels, which will be planted between Highway
18 and 37th Street SE along A Street. The Streets Department will dig a trench along
the street, and the west lane of A Street will be closed that morning to allow people and
equipment to work along the street in that area. The City will undertake the watering
of the hedge during the first two growing seasons, and the result should be significant
once planted. It will serve to cover the train yard from the street, and add to the
beautification of the area.
VI. Board Recommendations/Input
Members asked about the Tree City USA coloring contest, and Mr. Scamporlina said he will
follow-up with the district office. We need teacher involvement to make this happen. The
materials are ready when we want them. It could also be part of the Good 01' Days
celebration.
