The workshop was opened at 6:20 p.m. with a review of goals from
1990, their progress and completion to date. Several goals have a
mUlti-year impact including those that are the result of the Growth
Management Act and which range from the transportation element to
zoning and annexation policy updates.
Mayor Roegner reviewed the 1992 goals progress to mid-year.
Discussion centered on the SAMP, transportation element and
Lakeland Hills park plan which are all multi-year goals.
councilmembers wanting more in-depth information can review
progress on these as the different elements are completed and the
"policy packages" formulated and presented to the particular
council committee handling their review. When the SAMP package is
completed a joint presentation/workshop of the Planning and
community Development Committee and the Public Works Committee
would be appropriate. Mayor Roegner noted that funding sources
will be an issue on the water and sewer plans. The goal regarding
health services has been set aside so that we can concentrate on
some other major goals and because goals such as the municipal
court have taken priority. There was general consensus that the
preliminary goals should move forward.
Discussion took place on specific items. Councilmember Kurle asked
what goals we might develop as a result of the Youth 2000 report.
Mayor Roegner noted two possible objectives: (1) interest in
developing a youth center¡ and (2) hiring a youth coordinator for
youth programs. The question of what options to consider for the
construction of a community center, and improvements to the senior
center and library were discussed. Due to the current economic
situation and not wanting to commit the city to a plan that would
affect City finances over the next several years, Councilmembers
did not favor any of the financing methods discussed. The general
consensus was for staff to research options further and report back
to the council.
Councilmembers would like to see a goal which embodies the
objective to work cooperatively with neighboring jurisdictions to
further the best interests of Auburn citizens. Other suggested
topics were landscaping improvements along "A" Street S.E.¡

continuing street improvements along Main Street; investigating
