A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUBURN,
WASHINGTON, SUPPORTING COMMUTER RAIL IN A REVISED SYSTEM
MASTER PLAN TO BE SUBMITTED TO THE VOTERS.

WHEREAS, a Tacoma-Seattle commuter rail proposal was
included in the original Regional Transit System Plan produced
7

in 1993 by the Joint Regional Policy Committee (JRPC)
9
established by the Washington State Legislature to develop a
three-county high capacity transit plan, and
WHEREAS, in 1994 the Regional Transit Authority, created
10

by the Washington State Legislature to succeed the JRPC, also
14
included a Tacoma-Seattle commuter rail program in its Master
Plan for a three-county regional transit system, and
15
16
WHEREAS, the City of AUburn identified in its Downtown
Plan a possible commuter rail station as a potential catalyst
17
for revitalization efforts in downtown Auburn, and
18
WHEREAS, the city of Auburn conducted a study of
potential commuter rail station sites, and
WHEREAS, a citizens' Advisory Committee selected a Main
Street site as the most beneficial to the City of Auburn to
locate a commuter rail station, and
WHEREAS, the Commuter Rail Station Siting Plan was
approved by the Auburn Planning Commission and City Council
and will become an element of our Comprehensive Plan, and

WHEREAS, the City of Auburn has invested significant
amounts of resources, staff time and community input in
contributing to support for commuter rail in the Green River
3

Valley, and
WHEREAS, demonstrations of a prototype commuter rail car
6

in AUburn and of a "Try Rail" commuter rail operation between
Seattle and Tacoma through Auburn proved very popular.

NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CI'I'Y OF AUBURN,

WASHINGTON, IN A REGULAR MEETING DULY ASSEMBLED, HEREWITH
11
RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS:

Section 1.
The Regional Transit Authorit:y is hereby
urged to include a Tacoma-Seattle commuter rail operation in a
revised System Master Plan to be submitted to the voters.
section 2.
The Regional Transit Authority is urged to
16
work with the transit agencies in King, pierce a.nd Snohomish
Counties to illustrate for the voters and thereby increase
understanding of the potential service connections between
suburban bus and commuter rail operations.
Section 3. The Mayor is hereby authorized to implement
such administrative procedures as may be necessary to carry
out the directives of this legislation.
