Park Naming Committee
December 10, 2002
Meeting Notes
Dan Scamporlina opened the meeting with introductions. Those members of the committee in
attendance were John Simpson of the Lakeland Landscape Committee, Assistant Principal of
Auburn High School Paul Harvey, Little League representative Charlie Frampton, Lakeland
resident Diantha Kerbs, Park Board representative Roger Thordarson, and Museum Director
Patricia Cosgrove. Those unable to attend the first meeting were Muckleshoot Tribal
representative Virginia Cross, Maintenance/Landscape Coordinator Daryl Blalock, and Auburn
Youth Soccer representative Stu Snow.
The committee members were advised that the group was called together to select and make a
name recommendation for the new 15-acre park in the Lakeland Hills development. Amenities
in the park include youth ball fields, a picnic shelter, restrooms and concession stand, a
basketball court, open space, a skatepark and playground equipment.
Mr. Scamporlina distributed information, including a copy of Resolution 2555, which outlines
the manner in which parks are named. He gave them the names of the current parks and asked
that the Committee talk to their respective groups and bring back suggested names.
Some of the members had already spoken with members of their group and the following park
names were suggested as names to be considered:
Mark Boynton (former Mt. Maker Middle School educator)
Lakeland Sports Park
Lakeland Sports Complex
Chuck Booth
Lake Tapps Parkway Park
Crabtree Park
Ilalko
Sunset Park
Sunset Vista Park
Name it something about the view
Name it something to designate youth programming
Mr. Harvey asked if we needed a theme from which to decide. It was decided to make it all-
inclusive and to work it down. Everyone will come back with names to suggest; we will list
them; and work them into a recommendation using a point system.

As some of the members were unable to attend a daytime meeting, it was decided to find a time
in the evening that might allow the others better access. January 14th was decided as the date
(and due to some scheduling problems, the meeting will be held at the Parks and Rec. Admin.
Offices - Old Senior Center - 910 9th Street SE).
Park Naming Committee
January 14, 2003
Meeting Notes
Parks and Recreation Director Daryl Faber was introduced to the Committee members and he
welcomed everyone, thanking them for their participation in this naming process. He then turned
the meeting over to Dan Scamporlina. Those Committee members present were John Simpson
of the Lakeland Landscape Committee, Assistant Principal of Auburn High School Paul Harvey,
Little League representative Charlie Frampton, Lakeland resident Diantha Kerbs, Park Board
representative Roger Thordarson, and Auburn Youth Soccer Representative Stu Snow. In
addition, Auburn Resident Bill Mitchell joined the group. Staff members present, in addition to
Mr. Faber and Mr. Scamporlina, were Recreation Programmer Sharon LaVigne and Parks
Secretary Ann Fuqua. Those unable to attend this meeting were Muckleshoot Tribal
representative Virginia Cross, Maintenance/Landscape Coordinator Daryl Blalock, and Museum
Director Patricia Cosgrove.
Mr. Scamporlina distributed minutes of the last meeting, a membership list and the guidelines for
park naming, Resolution 2555. The previously proposed park names were listed and Dan asked
for any other suggestions that the members proposed.
Previously suggested names were:
Mark Boynton (former Mt. Maker Middle School educator)
Lakeland Sports Park
Lakeland Sports Complex
Chuck Booth
Lake Tapps Parkway Park
Crabtree Park
Ilalko
Sunset Park
Sunset Vista Park
Name it something about the view
Name it something to designate youth programming
The following names were added for consideration:
Volunteer Park
Chuck Henderson (former developer)
Sunset Youth Sports Park
Sunset Sports Park
Hilltop Vista Park

Harmony Park
Independence Park
Lakefield Park
Hilltop Sports Park
Crabtree Community Youth Park
Crabtree Memorial Park
Crabtree Sunset Youth Park
Crabtree Sports Park
Crabtree Community Park
Crabtrce Sunset Park
Several members of the group felt strongly that the Crabtree name should be made a part of the
park name because it was Mr. C abtree s WSlOn to bmld a designed community on the Lakeland
property. Some other members thought the "youth" should be included as the 15-acre park is
geared toward youth sports. After some discussion the members decided that they were ready to
vote. Mr. Harvey said that he had met with a group of High School students, who suggested
names. Each was given five adhesive dots to vote for their first, second and third choices. The
votes were tallied:
Crabtree Community Park 16
Crabtree Sunset Youth Park 8
Sunset Park 6
Crabtree Community Youth Park 5
Crabtree Sunset Park 4
Hilltop Vista Park 3
Crabtree Park 1
Mr. Scamporlina said that he would take the names forward to the Parks and Recreation Board at
their next meeting in February. Mr. Harvey suggested that the recommendation be accompanied
by a short biography of Mr. Crabtree and the reasons why the Committee thought he should be
honored.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:45 p.m.
