HomeMy WebLinkAbout4131RESOLUTION NO. 4 1 3 1 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUBURN, WASHINGTON, AUTHORIZING THE MAYOR AND CITY CLERK TO ACCEPT GRANT FUNDS OF $60,000 FROM THE WASHINGTON STATE OFFICE OF PUBLIC DEFENSE FOR THE PURPOSE OF IMPROVING DELIVERY OF COMMUNITY SERVICES IN THE CITY OF AUBURN WHEREAS, the State authorizes the Office of Public Defense to annually provide grant awards to up to five cities for the purpose of improving the quality of public defense services; and WHEREAS, the City of Auburn Municipal Court presides over cases involving indigent persons and the City of Auburn provides Public Defense Services; and WHEREAS, the City of Auburn desires to improve it public defense services by hiring a contract investigator to assist in the. public defense process through independent investigation, which can benefit both the defendant and the City by identifying information that may reduce the cost and time of court proceedings; and WHEREAS, it is more fiscally responsible, that as the City population grows, and the number of public defense cases grows accordingly, for the City of Auburn hire a contract investigator to conduct investigations rather than Resolution 4131 December 22, 2006 Page 1 additional public defenders in order to handle an increased level of investigations commensurate with the increased case load; and WHEREAS, use of an independent investigator reduces the potential for the public defender having to withdraw from cases, thus adding the increased cost by using a "conflict attorney" in those cases; and WHEREAS, the Washington State Office of Public Defense has reviewed the City of Auburn application and awarded the grant in the amount of $60,000 for 2007 for hiring of an investigator. NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUBURN, WASHINGTON, HEREBY RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Purpose. The City Council hereby authorizes the Mayor to accept of the Washington State Office of Public Defense grant for improved public defense services, in the amount of $60,000, to be used to hire an independent investigator for 2007. Section 2. The Mayor is hereby authorized to implement such administrative procedures as may be necessary to carry out the directives of this grant. Section 3.
