HomeMy WebLinkAboutITEM VIII Interoffice Memorandum WASHINGTON To: Councilmember Rich Wagner, Councilmember Bill Peloza, Councilmember Roger Thordarson , From: Lori Patrick, Cultural Arts Manager ~ CC: Daryl Faber, Parks and Recreation Director Mayor Pete Lewis Date: August 23, 2005 Re: Public Art Proposal at Auburn Way Sand F St. SE At the July 25 Public Works Committee meeting, I presented artist Ingrid Lahti's public art proposal for the intersection of Aubum Way South and F St. SE. Lahti is proposing a beaded stainless steel sign with cut-out lettering to mark a primary access point to the "Les Gove Community Campus." The 14-foot-long sign, installed on the southeast comer of the intersection, would sit on a concrete base and stand approximately 5-feet tall. It would be visible primarily to southbound traffic. Lahti also proposed a smaller sign made of the same material at the intersection's northeast comer visible to northbound traffic. The larger sign will be slightly convex, giving it a sculptural presence. The artist intends the signs to be elegant reminders of the White River, which once flowed through the area. A pattern derived from the surface of moving water will also be cut into the larger sign. (see attached sketch). Integral to the proposal is landscaping indicative of natural plantings one might find along a riverbed. Parks Planning and Development Manger Dan Scamporlina is working on a supporting landscape plan. At the July 25 meeting, committee members had three primary areas of concem: supporting directionallwayfinding signage, lighting, and readability of the reverse-cut lettering. Staff plans to appear before the committee, Sept. 12. In the meantime, I'd like to offer an update in these three areas.
