III AGENDA
A. King County Public Health
An update was given by Caren Adams form King County Public Health. Ms. Adams
explained there haven't been any decisions around the budget shortfall; the shortfall of
revue is more than just General Funds. Executives haven't decided what to recommend
to Council yet a number of proposals are out for review. The final decisions regarding the
budget will be made in late November.
Public Health is working hard to provide clean water, immunizations and maintain safe
disposal of waste to impact as many people as possible.
In 2007 Public Health served 5,700 clients/kids were served in the Auburn community;
4,500 of those kids have found a permanent medical provider and 3,000 have found
permanent dental providers. The agency is striving to change the demand for health care
system improvements and ensure access for all.
Will Public Health be responsible for getting the swine flu vaccines?
Public Health will make sure providers are getting the vaccine and will work with them
for planning and coordination efforts.
The vaccine will be one or two shots, it is still being tested. They are estimating that one
million people will need the vaccine. The vaccine will be free, but there will be an
administration fee for giving the shot(s). Public Health will assist people who can't afford
the administration fee.
Has teen pregnancy gone down in Auburn?
Teen pregnancy in Auburn was down, but has been on the rise recreantly. Mayor Pete
Lewis asked to be kept informed of the statistics on this issue in the future. It was
discussed that the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Coalition is no longer meeting and it should
be revitalized.
B. GriefWorks Update
An update on GriefWorks was given by Daryl Thompson. Their new facility is working out
well and they are focusing on building capacity. GriefWorks works hard not to turn anyone
away but times have been tough and their number of clients is growing. The GriefWorks
counselors are very committed to the program.
With grant funding GriefWorks has been able to operate their Grief Talk Program at six
