Call to Order The meeting was called to order by Chairman Len Elliott. Those members present in addition to Mr. Elliott were Lisa Harmon, Karen Wright, Bryce Landrud, Marion Nancarrow, and Lonnie Sundal. Arnie Galli was absent. Also present at the meeting were staff members: Parks Planning and Development Manager Bob Wuotila, Parks Horticulturalist Kirk Hadley, and Department Secretary Ann Fuqua. II. Minutes The minutes of the September meeting were approved as distributed; there was no October meeting. III. Correspondence/Public Input Mr. Wuotila reported that he had received an e-mail from Nathan Kirk, a citizen interested in the trees at Jacobsen Tree Farm. Mr. Kirk was evidently not aware of the master plan development occurring, and was concerned that construction on the property would lead to the destruction of the nursery trees. Mr. Wuotila advised Mr. Kirk of the on-going public meetings related to this piece of property and invited him to attend the next meeting. He also advised Mr. Kirk that the City had an inventory of the site conditions, including the trees, and said that we are addressing these questions at the meetings during the development of our master plan. There was a question from Mr. Kirk regarding a tree spade and whether or not the City owned that equipment, which we do not; and whether we could move the large trees. Mr. Landrud described this equipment and Mr. Wuotila suggested that his presence at the meeting could be helpful as he knows what is involved in moving trees. Staff and the consultant will address plans for saving as much plant material as is possible. IV. Old Business A. K Street - Neighborhood Grant Completion Mr. Wuotila advised that the application was completed and turned in to Michael Hursh. Kirk Hadley will make arrangements for the purchase and planting of the trees this fall; 14 trees will be planted on Second Street, and 23 planted on K Street. ALTBURN* MOkE T"HAN YOU IMAGINED He also reported that the landscaping of the trail at Bothell Park will take place this week-end with the organization of a Boy Scout Eagle project. Mr. Hadley displayed the plans for this section of the park. The project was designed to develop some privacy for the development neighbors who expressed concern that trail users could look into their homes because of the elevation in some areas of the trail. The new plantings were designed to shield homes from trail users, and to add to the aesthetics of the trail. V. New Business A. Significant Tree Recommendation Plans to recognize the two London Plane trees at 12 G Street Northwest are underway. The mayor will present a proclamation to Marilyn Dollinger for her stewardship in maintaining and caring for the trees over the years. A presentation will be made at the City Council meeting on Monday, December 7th VI. Board Recommendations/Input VII. Department Report Mr. Wuotila reported that survey crews are doing the work to get easements for the properties near Brannan Park for the trail. When this work is accomplished, Legal will write the easements and we will take them to the land owner for acceptance. The end result of this project is hopefully to be able to pave the trail. Plans for the Barrier Free Playground are evolving with the discovery of new components each day. There are so many new concepts in developing a project like this, and enabling children of differing skill levels and physical constraints is challenging. We are attempting to stimulate children by using touch, smell, sound, sight, and other sensory levels. Mr. Landrud asked about the trees in Les Gove Park and whether or not we had given thought to installing identifying plaques to the trees like an arboretum. This has been discussed previously but no plan is in place to do anything at this time. Cost is a factor in being able to sign the trees, but we have discussed creating a brochure with this information and making it available. VIII. Adjournment There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 2:45 p.m. Appro d this 5t'' Day of 7anuary, 2010 ; Chair ~ LcG~- Ann Fuqua, S etary
