HomeMy WebLinkAbout06-14-2000White River Valley Historical Society Board Meeting Minutes June 14, 2000, 1:30 to 2:30 Board Members Present: Earl Averill, Al B'Hymer, Earl Hagen, Bud Kuhlman, Debbie Maguire, John Meneghini, Maxine Moergeli, Charles Natsuhara, Bill Peloza, Dick Pickett, Doris Ramstead, Daryl Thompson, Hans Torklep, Board Members Excused: Marissa Armstrong, Libby Dykstra, Mike Hamilton, Walter Pacheco, Mike Stevens Mae Yamada Staff Present: Patricia Cosgrove Guests Present: Nancy Colson, Mel Sinex 1. Call to Order and Approval of Minutes President Kuhlman called the meeting to order and asked that the minutes be approved as sent. APPROVED It Chair Report A. President Kuhlman introduced Nancy Colson, Co-Chair of the Building Fund Committee. Nancy was a board member during the transitional from all volunteer to City/Society partnership, and has returned to lend her skills and enthusiasm to this short-term fund-raising effort. With $196,000 in hand, and a goal of $255,000 is expected to be made by the October 28 Harvest Masquerade Ball. Bud Kuhlman asked each board member to assist in this effort with a gift. B. Bud Kuhlman and Earl Hagen recommended that the new wing be named the Jim Shaughnessy Founders Wing, to honor Jim and the other founders who started the institution. The board unanimously and enthusiastically agreed to this recommendation. Treasury and Committee Reports III. Committee Reports A. Treasurer Dick Pickett reviewed the monthly financial report and noted that following the next Finance Committee meeting, a new format will be used to describe grant funds. B. Bill Peloza reported for the Harvest Masquerade Ball Committee. He asked that each board member be responsible to contribute to the raffle, by making/locating a donation or by working together to create a raffle item. C. Mike Stevens reported that the Committee had been carrying out some of its plans. Debbie Maguire reported that the Auburn Council of PTSA met at the museum and were asked to sponsor museum field trip experiences. John Meneghini is working with two local auto repair businesses to have waiting customers referred to the museum. Hans Torklep distributed counter top brochure racks to area hotels, restaurants and businesses. IV. Staff Report A. Patricia Cosgrove shared the drafted 2001 schedule for rotating exhibits. B. Museum director Cosgrove noted that one chapter and the cover of the book Shirakawa was being designed to ready it for presentation to publishers. Grant funds will be raised to support the printing, so that no financial obligation falls to the Society. C. The sculpture of Kisa Iseri has been named Issei to make clear that she honors all Japanese women who immigrated to the area and worked so hard to build a life for their families. Issei will be unveiled in late July. V. New Business Bud Kuhlman announced that all board members were invited to attend the kick off of the Building Fund June 21. Over wine and appetizers, many community members will learn about the museum, the Jim Shaughnessy Founders Wing, and will be asked to commit to support that effort. Page 2 June, 2000 Minutes VI. Mystery Board Member It was revealed that Maxine Moergeli was the mystery board member. It took many clues including that she was a better fisher than her spouse, her middle name, that her career lasted over 30 years, and that she is a twin. VII. Adjourn President Kuhlman adjourned the meeting at 2:30. The next meeting will be held at the Auburn Library on July 12, from 1:30 to 2:30.
