Board Meeting Minutes
February 20, 2008, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.
1. The meeting was called to order at 1:30, and the minutes were reviewed and
approved. New board member DeAnna Burnett-Keener was introduced and made
welcome. Vice President Beyersdorf reviewed the museum calendar for February and
March; a new item placed routinely on the board agenda and packet.
II. Board members reviewed a list of Free Wednesday sponsors, learned about this
way the community supports the museum, and signed up to ask friends and associates to
participate.
III. A. Treasurer Doug Hedger reviewed the 2007 Financial Report, and noted that
we ended the year with a surplus of $1628-but just barely, by the use of appropriate
grant support offsetting the cost of bookkeeping for a pay check or two. It was a tight
budget due to the decrease in earnings from the Harvest Ball and Fund Raising Auction.
The 2007 surplus will be rolled into the 2008 budget. Doug pointed out that we have
seasonal shifts in income throughout the year. Museum membership is up but
admissioins to the museum has declined. We were slightly under budget for both
membership and admissions last year. A motion was made to accept the financial report.
The motion passed.
B. Fundraising Committee Chair Judi Roland stated that the first committee
meeting will be March 12.
C. Collections Management Chair Michelle Marshman set committee meeting
for March 18.
D. Public Relations Committee Chair Terry Davis and Curator Tara McCauley
went to the Olympia and visited with Pam Roach to thank her and other legislators for
their continued support.
E. Harvest Costume Ball Committee Chair Terry Davis announced that this
year's ball will be October 25th at the Muckleshoot Casino. We need sponsors for the
event and to begin now to sell tables. Linda Cowen will head up the table captains. Terry
pointed out that it was really important that the board members get involved with selling
tickets and getting table sponsors.
IV. Staff Report
Curator of Education Tara McCauley shared one of four new Classroom Based
Assessment (CBA) Kits being developed with a grant from 4Culture. She shared contents
of the Japanese Interment Kit. Board members broke into groups to review its contents
and were amazed at the dramatic learning opportunity these kits will afford secondary
students.
V. President Kinggeorge adjourned the meeting at 2:30.
Next Board Meeting: March 19, 2008, 1:30 to 2:30
