Boazd Meeting Minutes
~ E - December 18, 2002, 1:30-2:30 p.m.

I. Call,to Order and Approval of Minutes:
A. President Armstrong called her last meeting to order at 1:37 p.m. and asked for the approval of the
minutes. Bud Kuhlman moved; and Earl Averill seconded, that the minutes be approved. MOTION CARRIED
II. Chair Report:
_ A. President Armstrong read an amazing list things the museum has accomplishments this year. We have a.
lot to be proud of--the staff; volunteers, and board have been hard at work, and it shows! Thank you, everyone.
' B. Cosgrove'presented some very nicely done certificates to the retiring board members. Included in the
" certificates were some great old pictures as well, which very clcverly matched the person; She also had some very
nice words to go along with the certificates. We will miss each and every, one.of them aad all they have brought to
the boazd and its growth the ]ast few yeazs.
` III: Staff Repoit: ' A. Each staffmember was invited to give a brief overview of what they have been up to this year:
I) Tina happily reported that she now has ALL our adifacts under one roof-that was not an easy job! In 2002
she'also prepazed the hat collection, with over 200+ hats, collecting donor info and dates, etc. She has helped
with the repairing and readiness of the second Semaphore for our collecdon. She is also pleased that she, has
selected the 400+ pictures that are now being scanned, and fhen the info will be gathered about each one and
included on a cooperative Web site operated by the Museum of History and Indushy.
2) Krisfin told us that she likes numbers and Has enjoys her work at the museum and all she has been able to put
into place since she's been here. She is'especially pleased with the change over to the new City mailing system.
It now happens electronically and is a super way to go she~says! She will be working on board binders neact, so
be sure to let her lmow if you need or want one.
3) Karen told us about her 1" Saturday. Family Fun event of the new year and that her year's worth of activities
. have been so many that they had to.be printed in two six month fliers. Her First Saturday Family Fun events are ,
set to go for another .year. She handed out, a tri-fold with registration info about the upcoming
Iapanese/American Civil Lib'erties seminar they haye on Jan 25. She also was excited to tell us that over 1,805
kids (from all.over) toured the museum this past year (that does not include the adult chaperones)..She even
shared a few of the thank you letters and picture books she has received from the students.

4) Janet let us know that she,has 71 volunteers working for ttie museum who have gifted over 1650 hours of their
volunteer time. She has aTranged the annual tr auning event (complete with a training booklet), as well as
quarterly lectures that keep the volunteers up to date on.what's new at the museum. She also hostcd her first
volunteer picnic and holiday party where she presented volunteers with recognition and awards. She has a
volunteer advisory board in place that meet quarterly to goj overvolunteer activities/business. She has also been
busy with facility rentals and'training new volunteeis. Whew!
5) Patricia reported that she is; proud of the museum, which she sees as growing up, coming out of its acquard

phase,and has moved through its jr. high about to the honor student phase, but is not yet at the college level, as
we aze still refining what we need to do.

IV. Financial Report:
~ A) Treasurer Patti Osthus was unable to make it to the meeting, so she had Dick Pickett fill in for her. e
reported that the Harvest Ball was the most successful one yet. $17,776 dollars was raised, with $5,991 in expenses,
for a net of $11,765. Way to go, team: * NOTE: (LoriAnne and Marissa will co-chair next year's `Black & White
Ball" and it will be held Saturday, Nov 1, 2003 at the Meridian Valley Country Club in Kent). We have also
received a hard to get expansion grant of $4,999. And the gift shop was a big money maker this past ycar; it more
than doubled its revenues. Bill Peloza also, reported that the Audit Committee would be oonducting an audif on
January 28'h. He will have a report for the Feb. board meeting. Bill Peloza moved, and Hans Torklep seconded, that
the financial report be approved as presented. MOTION CARRIED
V. Elections:
A. The Nominating Committee presented the following names to be elected as new members of the 2003.
White River Valley Historical Society Board.of Directors: (in their second terms) Hans Torklep, Dick Pickett and
(in theix first [erms) Kathy Lewis, Mike - Hamilton, Gordy Nishimoto, and Ann . Mehl.
Earl Hagen moved, and Bud Kuhlman seconded, thnt we elect the slate of names as prasented. Larry Mille; will
join the boazd as an appointment as he is replacing a board member leaving before their term in finished.
MOTION CARRIED
B. The Nominating Committee then also presented the following names for officers of the board of
: directors of the WRV Historical Soctety: Pres Charles Natsuhara, V Pres Debbie Maguire, 5ec Marissa Armstrong,
and Treasurer Dick Pickett. Mike Stevens moved, and Nicole Karwhite seconded, that the slate be elected as
presented. , MOTION CARRIED
C. Outgoing President Armstrong then turned the meeting over to incoming President Charles Natsuhara..
He thanked Marissa for her excellent leadership (even though he said he was not awaze that he had to knit gifts for
the'staff as she had done,'if he b'ecame chair! He was assured that chocolate would do just fine instead), and he
thanked all the outgoing board members for their hard work as well. He 1'ooks fonvazd to the coming year and his
term as president.' He also said toj expect some committee phone calls soon; as he fills spots he needs.
vI. New Business:
A. Debbie reminded people that.a membership to the museum makes a great Christmas gift. She is giving
tluee memberships to family members as presems this year. They make excellent birthday presents as well. She
also just realized that she wuld easily renew her,membership by having an up to date credit, card on file.
B. Debbie also talked a bit about the new Aubum Coinmunity Radio that is being started in town: She is
becoming involvcd with its start and will keep it postedion its progress. The museum is one of the first to sign up to
do a show. This should be interesting.
C: Nicole will also being,doing a presentation to the JCs soon.
VI Adjournment:
President Natsuhara adjoumed the meeting at 2; 25 p.m; People were invited to enjoy the cake brought by
outgoing President Armstrong. iThe next meeting will be held on Jan 15, 2003 from 1;30., 4:00 p.m., in the
MUCKLESHOOT ROOM at tfie museum. Tttis will be our annual retreat. Come with your fresh ideas and don t
forget the eictra time we will sperid there.
