Boatd lvieeting Minutes August 21, 2002, 1:30-2:30 p.m. ' , Board Members Present: Marissa Amnstrong, LoriAnne Claudon, Earl Hagen, Nicole Karwhite, Bud Kuhlman, Debbie Maguire, Maxine MoeTgeli, Chazles Natsuhaza, Patty Osthus, Bill Peloza, Dick Pickett, Mae Yamada. Board Members Excused: Michael Cassella-Blackburn, Mike Stevens, Hans Torkelp . Boazd Members Not Excused: Ray Jerry ' Staff Present: Patricia Cosgrove, Dr. Tina Brewster-Wray T• Ca11 to Order and Approval of Minutes . A. President Armstrong called the meeting to order at 1:30 p.m and asked for the approval of the minutes. Bill Peloza moved, and.Dick Picket seconded, that the minutes be approved as presented. MOTION CARRIED IYL B. Director Cosgrove introduced us to the newest Aubum Pazks and Recreation staff e~i Dan ScamporLna. Dan brings a wealth of experience to his,new position. He has been, among many thin s is cazeer, a grant writer; landscape architect, mastec planner; etc! All these things will come in handy when rt comes time to work on the Olson Farm Project and its future progress and plans. Welcome; Dan, we look fonvazd to working with you. II. Chair Report - 'A. President Armstrong talked'about her Auburn Good Ol' Days weekend and the fun that she had handing out WRVM fans. She dressed in her red;. wlute, and blue and became, the museum's ctilef ambassador for the weekend. She also mentioned that she believes that the museum needs 1o be in the parade neaR year; as we aze _ Aubum's history. Nicole told us that she had access to a 1919 Oldsmobile that runs that we may be able to use next year. Tlus is going to be fun. Debbie tbanked Marissa, as well as Mike. Stevens and Bill Pelo7a for also handiug r out fans over the weekend.. She i also thanked Patricia for the. nice museum display that was set up in an empty ~ storefront window downtown that is sure to attraet some visitors to the museum. B..Mazissa also talked about the upcoming museum programs and how exciting they are. She is especially . excited abont the Got Wood event on Sept 7`h from 124 p.m:, She is thinking that it will be a good one to amact - some more boys to our events. iII: Treasury and Committee Report A. Treasurer Osthus went over her treasurer's -report. She talked about the operations budget and how we aze meeting our goals. As of August 14'h, in membership funds we have $4,106 of the desired $6K; in ttie annual drive we are at $7~ 488 of $8K; and with the Shirakawa book we have raised $3,335.out of $5,$00. So we are pretty well on track for the year. Dick Pickett moved; and Bi11! Peloza seconded, that we approve the report as presented. MOTION CARRIED " B. Sculptor:Committee Chair Charles Natsuhara updated us on the committee's work. They have met ' hvice to discuss acquiring the:new pieces planned. They talk8;d about working with Sonny Rivera again, or going with someone new. They deoided to contact Sonny again and see what he would do for us with the 22K we have to work with right.now: He is interested, but Iris price for both pieces and installation will be 40K.They are working to " prepare a contract with him to do Big John, as well astwo working models, now and then hopefully after we have the remaining 18K, to do the Arthur Ballazd piece. We iwere atile to get the funds we have now for the project from the mandatory gaming table that the Muckleshoot Casino is required to have, and are hoping to be a recipient oF those funds again next yeai so we can complete our project. C. Shirakawa Committee member Mae Yamada tliauked Stan Flewelling and Patricia for all iheir hard work , with the book and its writing and promotion. She talked about how hard Stan works on his reseazch as well as his cazeful attenfion to detail. Bill P,eloza asked that Debtiie set up some dates for him with the service groups in the area so he can go and promote t}ie book: D. PR Chair Niwle Kanyhite started off my sharing all sort of press regazding the new Interurban exhibit. There has been a ton of good publicity out there lately? Nicole, says, "Way to go, Patricia!" Publiciry even included an episode of Evening Magazine being shot from the(museum. Nicolc said that came about from her association (with members of) the Chamb'er's Leadership Team. She then shared the results of her branding committee Fh.«..r.'.. . . . . ieetings by unveiling her tagtine ~pieces. It's good stufF The museum's new mantra will be: "Ordinary People, Extraordinary History". She also has planned, among other things, to do a video (which is out to bid to get done right now), a 30-second PSA (public service announcemenY), and drieing/directional signs, Nicole moved, and Earl Hagen seconded, that we approve tagline as presented. MOTION CARRIED x- . IV. Staff Report . ~ A.. Gosgrove informed us that the Olson Faan lease has gone before the city council and no.w will be coming back to us.. B. Cpsgrove also informed us that we did not receive the State Grant that we were.expecting. She said they , gave us very valid reasons why we did not receive it, that we can leam from for the nexC time. We now will not be able to apply for that same,granYmoney again till the 2003-2005 cycle. C. Curator of Collections Dr. Tina Brewster-Wray shared with us the results of her recent trading of aitifacts. The handout she gave us showed us that she did very well. She showed us in the display case in the . classroom some of atticles that she procured. Thank you, Tioa for the accounting and the good news. D. Cosgrove also shaied-with us the staff vacation dates. Be sure to refer to the list on the agenda if you need anything from them in the near future. _ E. Harvest Ball Co-Chair gave us a quick update on the Ball and its progress. She was not able to get time with Ron Crocketas hoped for, but she did find out that they do have a;less expensive menu that we could have been offered and she will explore that more and see what she can do. Dick informed us that we have seven' ' corporate: tables sold so faz.' Bill !also shared the form that he fias to help hnn keep track of ticketsales'and money more efficiently this yeac V. New Business A. Debbie asked to take some Shirakawa books with her and Mae as they attend the nexrt AKCHO mtg. on fol-&.August 27`" at the Cedar River' Education Center. She will take those as well as some fliers announcing. our Supcoming events. B. Marissa was invited to be a spealcer at an upcoming Filipino event on Sept 7th. She will speak about the. musenm's interest in collecting history of tBat community, and our plan for a Filipino Community exhibit. C. We discussed ihe need to vote on the Olson Farm lease agreement that has been recently redone by the city attomey. And decided to make a motion to make it official, as we were assured by the committee that noY a ' whole lot had changed from the versiom we aiready did work on.. Charles Natsuhara moved, and Nicole Karwhite seconded, that the board sign Olson Farm lease. MOTION.CARRIED VI.
