Board Meeting Minutes ) 'November 20, 2002, 1:30-2:30 p.m. Board Members Present: Marissa Armstrong, Midhael Cassella-Blackburn, I,oriAnne Claudon, EarT Hagen; Nicole Karwhite, Bud Kulilman, Debbie Maguire, Tom McGee; Maxine Moergeli, Charles Natsuhara, Dick Pickett, Patty Osthns, Bill Peloza, Milce Stevens, Haus Torklep, and Mae Yamada ; . Board'Members Absent: Ray Jerry Staff Present: Patricia Cosgiove, Kristen Bmhalm, and Dan Scamporlina 1. Call to O`rder and Approval of Minutes: ' A. President Armstiong called the meetiug to order at 1:33 p.m. and asked for the approval of the minutes. Charles Natsuhara moved, and Patty Osthus seconded, that the minutes be approved with the following coirecUons: Add Kristen Bruhahn's name to the list of staffpresent afthe meeting. MOTION CARRIED B. We also got a sneak peek at one of our new board members, Tom McGee. Tom represents the Boeing Company; where he has worked since 1978. He cnanages the new development division atthe Aubum plant. This will be his first time serving on a.6oard, but he has always been commuqity minded and is. looking forward to lus . time with us. And we are looking forward to that as well, as we value our Boeing conneotioq knowing iYs an impor4wt one... so welcome aboazd, Tom. We're_glad you are here! ! I II. Chair Report A.. President Armstrong reported on the opening of the new exhibit Ahl Tee-ah and what a success it was and how special it tumed out to. be. There were about 50 attendees, with 40 of those being'from the Muckleshoot Tribe. The evening was one. of surprises and'spontaneity with lots of singing, drnnuning and sharing. She said the ' museum staff put on a Jery nicei,spiead. She hopes that boazd mem6ers; will come more o$en to these types of events and bring theu families and friends. ` B: Vice Chair Chazles Natsuhara reported for the committee the slate of officers they aze proposing for the ~002-2003 year. Theyare: Charles Natsuhara, President; Debbie Maguire, Vice President; Dick Pickett; Treasurer; - Marissa Armstrong, Secretiry. New boazd.members include Mike Hamilton, Ann Meh1,,Gordy Nishimoto, Tom McGee,'Kathy Lewis; with Hans'Torklep and Dick Pickett retuining for second terms. Something was mentioned about straws and someone drawing the short one. Charles quesrioned if the proposed "open seaY" idea for.the Muckleshoot Tribe would requue a bylaw change. We will need to check on thaT, Earl Hagen moved and Bud Kuhlman seconded that we.accept the2002-2003 slate as presented for the next term. _ • MOTION CARRIED III. , Treasury and Committee Report: ' A. Treasurer Osthus went o'ver her treasurer's report. She said we had a good October. Included on the (pink sheet) report she handed out, is a sutrunary of the most important financial itetns.of interest. B. We also. went over the proposed 2003 Budget. Bill Peloza explained that the finance committee tried its best to make the budget as reasonable as possible. Bill Peloza moved, and Dick Pickett seconded, that the 2003 budget be approyed as presented. ' MOTION CARRIED ` C. Haivest Masquerade Ball Chairs Michael and LoriAnne and crew took big bows for jobs, very well done! It was our most successfulj Ball yet. They said we made our money on the sponsorships, and that we need ' eVpn more of them next year: Ten; is their goal (how's that? ttiey're already at work on next year!). They said they would pro6ably try a different locaYion next yeaz, possibly the Meridian Valley Country Club; as there were some glitches with Emerald Downs. They thanked Donna Hamilton for the wonderful decorarions. They also noted that they will bring more tickets for the Raffle-as they RAN OIJT of tickets after selling $2,000 of.them!!! That's unreal, and mainly because of the awazing efforts of seller Nicole Karwhite and buyer Dick Pickett. Thanks go to both of them as well. . ~ _ B. Olson Farm Advisory Committee Member Mike Stevens informed us tUat we have entered in a re- roofing contract for the farm, that in hindsight should have been brought to tfie board for approval before it was ~ecided upon-and wanted to do so today. He explained that it was a good.bid and was half the price of other bids ye received He told us .that Ivlike FIamilton would be coming back to the, boazd to help us with these kinds of things. Bill Peloza moved, and Bud Kuhlman seconded, that we accept the Jorve ConstrucUon bid of 161K, to re- roof the smaller outbuildings,-funded.fully by our State grant. ~ MOTION CARRIED ' IV. Staff Report: A: Director Cosgrove reported for Kazen Ilaas about the current Outreach Education efforts. All 3`d graders will visit throughout the year again, like they did last year, as it has been built into the 3`" grade'curriculum to do so. And now Karen is working to.develop a tour designed for the preschool and kindergarten age groups She would t also love to have it built in that middle schoolers come each year as part of their currioulum as well. ; B. Cosgrove also shazed a list of Free Wednesday sponsors and possible sponsors. She reminded us that if I we were a contact person for any of the people we wcre soliciting, to please follow up and see if they are srill interested. She explained that with our 2003 budget now being up over 250IC, it wIll enable us to now compete with i the larger museums in the:siate, and actually may make receiving sustained support grants easier: ~i V: New Business,: . A. Tantalizing Trees 12/7... be there, bring a kid or two! B. Debbie told us about the beautiful vintage pictures she saw hanging azound the Safeway in Ellensburg. They really make-an impact and she could see how they could entice people to visit their local museum to see more. It something to think about trying here in Aubum, as we now have some, photo exhibits designed for. traveling. F;. C. Nicole told us about speaking to a group of about 50 pcople at the Covington Chamber of Council meeting-a great way for boazd members to share information about.the, museum. ~ VI. Adjomninent: ` President Armstrong;adjoumed the meeting at 2:33 p:m. The next meeting will be held on Dec 18, 2002, °)from 1:30-,2:30 p.m.; in the MUCKLESHOOT ROOM at the museum.
