HomeMy WebLinkAbout01-20-2010 White River Valley Historical Society Annual Board `RetreaY January 20, 2010,1:30 to 4 p.m. Muckleshoot Room, White River Valley Museum Members present: Mike Gerber, Judi Roland, Doug Hedger, Ronnie Beyersdorf, Hugo Hernandez, Jennifer Hamor, Megan Evans, Richard Artura, Tom Campbell, Gator Chamberlain, Pat Cavanaugh, Clarissa Ruston, Julie Herren, Jennifer Traufler Members excused: Lisa Scarff, Ken Nelson Members not present: Mae Yamada, Gerry Honeysett Staff present: Patricia Cosgrove, Kristen Bruhahn, Tara McCauley, Erin Hash, Hilary Pittenger Guest: Jim Kelly, Executive Director, 4Culture 1. Call to order and Approval of Minutes The meeting was called to order at 1:33 by President Mike Gerber. President Gerber welcomed members, provided a brief overview of the meeting agenda, pointed out the materials distributed, and asked for approval of the minutes. MOTION CARRIED The four officers, Mike, Doug, Judy & Ronnie, each introduced themselves to the group sharing information about their lives. Throughout the remainder of the meeting, interspersed between the below listed activities, members were called upon to share information about themselves. (See little known facts following board minutes) II. Orientation to Serving on a Board Jim Kelly, Executive Director, 4Culture provided perspectives on serving on a board; emphasizing the White River Museum's in-depth & comprehensive commitment to community, as well as, referencing the Carver Model of Policy Governance; a guide for boards who set limitations on means without micromanagement and thereby support expansion of services provided within the community. III. Committee Descriptions Patricia Cosgrove provided a brief review of each of the committee functions and expectations, for the purpose of initiating board members toward selection of service area. ■ Mary Olson Farm Committee • Collections Management Committee • Halloween Costume Ball + Auction Committee ■ Finance Committee • Community Connections Committee ■ Education Liaisons : Docent, Farm Tours, Museum Tours IV. Museum Management Overview presentations were provided by White River Museum staff as follows : Governance/ServiceMission by Patricia Cosgrove; Exhibits and Education by Tara McCauley/Erin Hash; Collections and Research by Hilary Pittenger and Administration/Finances by Patricia Cosgrove. V. Committees The group broke into committee groups based upon board members' service area interests. Within the groups, a chair and meeting schedules for the upcoming year were selected. VI. Committee Reports 'Mary Olson Farm Committee to meet on the 3rd Wednesday of each month following the board meeting. February 17th's meeting is a trip out to the farm. All board members are encouraged to join in, wear your muck- boots! `Collections Management Committee to meet February 8th, 1 pm 'Halloween Costume Ball Committee to establish meeting times next month. All board members are encouraged to participate in ticket sales and decorations as our event approaches next October 23ra. 'Community Connections Committee to meet every other month for hour starting February. 'Finance Committee: no report. VII. BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS AROUND TABLE President Mike Gerber Adjourn Time: 4:07pm NEXT MEETING: February 17, 1:30 to 3, Museum Little known facts: Mike G. - expecting 3ro grandchild in August & hosting a wedding in October (Larry Miller) Judi R. - 4 grandchildren; lives on river not far from Mary Olsen Farm; extensive history of community service Doug H. - enjoys travel; traveling wife - domestic duties / parenting core to his life; (Bill Peloza) Ronnie B. - 4 grandchildren, retired from Boeing, knows gold/money (Dario Cugini) Pal C. - retired, 4 grantlkids, family hardware business since 1887, in France for a year knowing off to VietNam at any time. Wed to Jan C. Jennifer H.- works with Muckleshoot tribe encouraging home ownership, 2 daughters (Doug Hedger) Megan E. - grandparents had fully functional farm in Yelm, boards international students, France, photography , 2 daughers. (Michelle Marshman) Hugo H. - Venezuela, Hawaii, Japan, Indonesia, Bali, multilingual & much traveled- fish behavior & habitat / Muckleshoot Tribe (Tara McCauley) Jennifer T. - marathon runner, loves kids, from eastern Washington, 2 boys 14 & 11 (Linda Cowan) Clarissa R. - family loves history, special interest education Tom C. - lived in France for 6 months while in college; interests photography & travel (Terry Davis) Gator - college nickname; creativity from Montana - recited original poetry for the group (Doug Hedger) Richard - conceived in NY, born in CA, raised in WA - served on the Provail board; passionate about finance; introduced his boys & father-in-law (Ronnie B.) Julie H. - 4 grandchildren, interest in psychology
