Chair Leslie Moore called the meeting to order at 4:31 pm. Ms. Moore called for
approval of the December minutes. Commissioner Tanya Rottle moved the
December minutes be approved as submitted. Commissioner Patricia Judd
seconded the motion. Motion approved.
Chair Leslie Moore welcomed newest arts commissioner Kristen Brock and
Introduced Daryl Faber, Director of Parks, Arts and Recreation.
II. Staff Report
Director of Parks, Arts and Recreation Daryl Faber reported that on December 29,
2009 Laurie Rose, Cultural Arts Manager was laid off from the City of Auburn due to
budget cuts. Mr. Faber underscored the importance of the Arts to the City of
Auburn and that the City is committed to providing and supporting quality arts
events, experiences and opportunities.
Due to staff layoffs throughout the Parks department and the city as a whole,
restructuring will take place to ensure adequate staff resources and continue
services to the community. Also noted, the programming budget only had limited
reduction, so levels of funding are similar to those in 2009. Julie Brewer, the
Community Event and Marketing Manager in the Parks Department will assume
oversight of the Arts Commission. Maija McKnight, Visual/Public Arts Coordinator
and Jim Kleinbeck, Theater Operations Specialist, will continue as before with
increased responsibility in various program areas. Jim Westhusing, Teen
Coordinator, will be dedicating 25% of his time to Auburn Avenue children's
programming. Various other staff will supplement program areas as necessary.
Discussion continued. Commissioners requested future meeting discussion on
benchmarks and goals in order to continue to provide quality programming that
resonates with the Auburn community.
III. Other/New Business
Maija McKnight provided an overview of upcoming programs and events. BRAVO
sales are lower than expected and a major marketing push is currently being
planned. Discussion of the role of Auburn Avenue Theater arose as a opportunity to
provide quality arts programming and arts education opportunities.
Councilmember Wagner noted that the Community Center Committee voted for the
Gymnasium portion (Phase B.) of the Community Center to proceed and that it is
desired to have an artistic element included. Architecture film BLRB, Committee and
staff, identified the required gates that limit access to the upper portion of the
climbing wall on the South facing wall of the gymnasium as a potential public art
project. The Public Art Committee will be meeting on January 21, 5 pm in City Hall,
Room 2 to review artist images and discuss the project.
