The following outlines the scope of work and
outcomes that Washington State University students
from the third year architecture studio under the
direction of Professor Gregory Kessler will develop
during the spring semester 2010.
The Auburn Environmental Park District wishes to
attract "Green" businesses through zoning code
incentives and encourage sustainable development.
The focus of the project will be to provide the city of
Auburn with a series of strategies and ideas that can
be presented to potential businesses, developers and
land owners that focus on the aesthetics of green
design. For this project "Green" Aesthetics this will be
defined as the ability of architecture to express a
language of design that transforms ordinary
experiences of business and manufacturing into
extraordinary places that have a sensitivity and respect
for the natural environment.
The overall project is that students will be asked to design a prototypical business park building that can
serve as a model for the city of Auburn to present to potential developers, owners and start up businesses.
Also included will be strategies for sustainable site development including storm water management. The
building will be a hybrid consisting of approximately 20,000 s.f. and will include the following spaces.
• Manufacturing space: 3,000s.f.
• Employee recreation
• Cafe/ Employee eating space
• Day Care
• Entry/ Reception
• Office space/ Meeting/ Conference rooms
• Three housing units of approximately 8oo s.f. each
Early in February students will travel to
