HomeMy WebLinkAbout03-02-2010Minutes Tuesday, March 2, 2010 2:00 p.m. Conference Room Parks and Recreation Administration Building Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 2:00 by Chairman Len Elliott. Those Board members attending, in addition to Mr. Elliott were Karen Wright, Bryce Landrud, Lonnie Sundal and Arnie Galli. Lisa Harmon was absent. Also present at the meeting were staff members, Parks Maintenance Manager Mike Miller, Parks Horticulturist Kirk Hadley and Parks Secretary Julie Mehl. II. Minutes The minutes of the February meeting were approved as distributed. III. Correspondence/Public Input IV. Old Business A. Significant Tree Nomination Mr. Miller has stopped at the house on 201 R St NE where the Oak tree is located to discuss the nomination with the homeowner. He has been unable to contact but will continue efforts. The Maple near Cooper's Corner was discussed but it may be outside city limits. 6 2nd & K St NE Tree Planting Mr. Miller commented regarding planting in February of 38 Cherry trees on 2nd & K St. It was decided next time they will obtain a street right-of-way permit. Mr. Elliott remarked there was good feedback as well as two articles in the Auburn Reporter regarding the project. AUBURN* MOItE THAN YOU IMAGINED V. New Business A. Neighborhood Tree Grant Mr. Miller spoke with Permit staff regarding tree grant for Park Ave. They concluded there are no overhead lines or utilities in the area, just cable. He plans to contact neighbors to inform them of the project. Mr. Hadley added they would like to remove the Crab Apple trees and replace with 23 - 28 Korean Dogwoods. B. Arbor Day Mr. Elliott remarked that Mayor Lewis produces an Arbor Day proclamation in April. VI. Board Recommendations/Input A. Ms. Wright asked how we could educate citizens on proper pruning techniques. Some ideas were to include a flyer in utility bills and/or send information out to the HOA's on file. Mr. Landrud agreed to find a brochure with pruning tips. Ms. Harmon began writing a news release regarding pruning and Mr. Landrud agreed to finish it. B. Mr. Elliott reminded the group that we are still actively looking for a new board member. VII. Department Report A. Mr. Miller gave an update on the upcoming Clean Sweep project on May 8. It will consist of Blackberry and Scotch Broom removal along the entire length of the White River Trail starting at Game Farm Wilderness through Roegner Park. It will include the new portion of trail that will extend to A Street SE. Volunteers will also be asked to remove Blackberry bushes, Scotch Broom and Tansy Ragwort from Mill Pond Park. B. The Parks Department will be looking for an Eagle Scout to plant over 400 plants along the portion of River bank along Roegner Park in September. Plants will be purchased with a$2,500 grant received by the Planning Department. The Parks Department will be inviting Clean Sweep Volunteers to return in October to plant at the White River Trail extension. VIII.
