Tuesday, April 6, 2010 Meeting Minutes

Ballroom Dance

I. Call to Order, Approval of Minutes, Introductions and Approval of Minutes:
Chair Leslie Moore
called the meeting to order at 4:30 pm. Ms. Moore called for approval of the March minutes.
Commissioner Nancy Colson moved the March minutes be approved as submitted. Commissioner
Debby Deal seconded the motion. Motion approved.
II. Pacific Ballroom Dance
Matt Longhurst the artistic director and instructor for Pacific Ballroom Dance provided an overview on
the organization. Pacific Ballroom Dance is a non-profit organization that builds character in youth by
providing a positive ballroom dance experience. Although a 15 year old organization, last year they
moved into a permanent studio location in Auburn near the Supermall and are working to be more
involved in the Auburn arts community. The organization has strong studio involvement, but are
currently working on a number of initiatives to work inside the schools, both as part of an afterschool
program at Rainier Middle School as well as working towards introducing curriculum based dancing
th
lessons at the 5 grade level.
III. 4Culture, Local Arts Agencies in King County
Charlie Rathbun provided an overview of 4Culture and the variety of programs which it administers.
4Culture is the cultural services agency for King County, Washington providing programs, financial
support and services in the arts, public art, heritage and historic preservation for all residents and
visitors in King County. Auburn is part of a network of Local Art Agencies (LAAs), municipal
jurisdictions that work towards presenting, advocating and strengthening the arts throughout King
County. 4Culture supports LAAs by hosting quarterly meetings on a variety of topics as well as
distributing “sustained support” funding.
IV. Committee Report
Performing Arts
Initial plans are being coordinated for the 2010-2011 Season. Comments taken from prior
Commission meetings will be taken into account and much of the detailed conversations regarding
performances and scheduling will occur at future Performing Arts Committee meetings in which the
Chair will then report back to the full Commission.
Public Art
The Public Art Committee Meeting is rescheduled from Thursday, April 15 to Tuesday, April 20. The
Committee will be meeting with artist Rachael Dotson and providing feedback to a mural design that
will be painted on panels as part of Clean Sweep and mounted on the side of Auburn Avenue
Theater.
Visual Art
Commissioner Deal announced that this year’s ArtRageous: Artists in Action Art Fair will occur on
Saturday, August 7. The committee will be working to formulate this year’s content over the next few
committee meetings. Maija McKnight also shared that ArtRageous received the top Spotlight Award
from the Washington Parks and Recreation Association and will be attending the annual conference
to accept the award.
Ms. Deal also noted that in the next committee meeting discussion will include the Auburn Arts Co-Op
recent meeting and the Ethnic Art Connection Booking Conference.
Arts Education
Commissioner ponna Smart noted that the next Arts Education Committee meetings will be on
Tuesday, May 11. '
V. Other/New Business.

Staff Maija McKnighf noted seVeral upcoming events including the Cultural Arts Summif on Tuesday, April
13 held in conjunction with the Vlfasfiington Parks and Recreation Conference in Tacoma, The Cultural
Congress coprdinated by the Washington State Arts Alliance, April 26-28 which staff will be attending.
The frst meeting of the Aubum Arts Co-Op is scheduled for Thursday, April 8, 7pm at the Auburn AVenue.
Theater. The concluding performance of the BRAVO series is on Saturday, April 24.
