~ WASHINGTON MINUTES
June 17, 2010
I. CALL TO ORDER
The June 17, 2010 meeting was called to order at 3:00 p.m. in Conference Room Three
located on the second floor of Auburn City Hall, 25 West Main Street, Auburn, WA.
Committee Members aresent were: Chair Suzanne Limric, Michael Harbin, Bette Van: Gasken, JoAnne Walters,
. Barbara Derda, Chuck Booth, Daryl Thompson and Lela Brugger Committee Members not present: Tony Ladner, Virginia Lloyd-Baron and Marian Thomas
Staff present were: Community Services Manager Michael Hursh and
Community Senrices Project Assistant Kirsten Reynolds
Guests present were: Mayor Pete Lewis
II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
• The Committee reviewed the April 13, 2010 minutes.
o Member Derda motioned to accept the April 13, 2010 minutes as read;
Member Booth seconded the motion.
m The April 13, 2010 minutes were approved.
III. ANNOUNCEMENTS
• Kin4 Countv Fundinq
Mayor Pete Lewis announced to the Human Services Committee that King County is _
permanently cut the Human Services funding as of July 1, 2010. Pass-through money will
still be available, which Cities receive money, directly from the County and then pass it on
to agencies. The public can contact King County Councilmembers Julia Patterson or Pete
von Reichbauer if they have concems about this. Mayor Lewis asked staffto pull the
names of Human Service agencies previously supported by King County general funds so
the Committee is has lost funding. • Healthv Cookinq on a Tiqht Budqet
Committee Member Lela Brugger talked about the successful nutrition cooking classes
happening because of the partnership the City, the YMCA and the Aubum Food Bank have
formed. The City of Auburn Cultural Diyersity Liaison Alexandra Davis and Culfural
Programs Specialist Diana Johnson organized the `Healthy Cooking on a Tight Budget'
Program. Member Brugger explained Diana Johnson has great energy in presenting to the
attendees and further explained the program is being promoted at the Auburn Food Bank.
Aubum Food Bank clients have been encouraged to attend the cooking classes because
much of the food prepared during the class is from the Food Bank. The class is realistic so
people learn how to prepare different meals from items they receive at the Food Bank.
• Citizen Corps Council
The Citizen Corps Council supports COAD (Community Organizations Active in Disaster)
as an ad-hoc,group to help manage responsibilities of directing and meeting individuaPs
needs in the event of a disaster. COAD asked fior a joint member from the Human Services
Committee to be an active partner in their group. Member Derda attend their meeting and
decided she could not to be a joint member of both groups at this time.
IV. AGENDA
• Human Services Fundinq Apulication
Community Services Manager Michael Hursh reviewed how the 17 city joint application
process was streamlined via the intemet, allowing agencies to submit their application on-
line. The multi jurisdictional partnership was successful, but with every new process fhere
. were a few#echnical bumps along the way.
Community Services Projecf Assistant Kirsten Reynolds reviewed the applications and rating fools. The application outline was reviewed in detail with the Committee.
Timeline for the funding recommendations: .
June - Applications received and distributed to Human Services Committee Members
July - Deliberation and review of proposed budget Auqust - Meet with perspective new agencies
Seatember - Meet with Planning & Community Development Committee (PCDC) to report
funding recommendations
October - Public comment on proposed funding recommendation period, along with public
heacing for federal money required
November - Action plan to be submitted
December- 2011/2012 City Budget to be passed
Discussion took place about agencies needing to provide a total number of employees for
their programs. Moving forward it is a possibility to build this question back in fo future
applications; however, now if any new agencies are being considered for funding, this could
be #he first question asked of the agency.
IV. ADDITIONAL TOPICS
• Art Raqeous
Member Brugger announced the August 7th event called Art Rageous; they are seeking
volunteers. Ifyouu are interested or need more information please contact Lela Brugger for
details.
V. NEXT MEETING
_ Because several members have not been able to attend the regular scheduled meetings there
will be a silent.poll asking everyone to vote on their preferred date/time for ongoing Human
Services Committee meetings.
The next meeting is scheduled for July 20, 2010 at 3 p:m. in Conference Room 3
