HomeMy WebLinkAbout10-05-2010 City of Auburn Arts Commission, City Hall Room 3 Tuesday, October 5, 2010 Meeting Minutes Present: Leslie Moore, Patricia Judd, Debby Deal, Tanya Rottle, Donna Smart, Nancy Colson, Greg Watson, Councilmember Rich Wagner, Art Coordinator Maija McKnight, Arts & Events Manager Julie Brewer Excused: Cary Davidson, Linda Elliott, David Sader I. Call to Order, Approval of Minutes, Introductions and Approval of Minutes: Chair Leslie Moore called the meeting to order at 4:35 pm. Ms. Moore called for approval of the September minutes. Commissioner Greg Watson moved the July minutes be approved as submitted. Commissioner Tanya Rottle seconded the motion. Motion approved. Lela Brugger and Florence Kruger representing the Auburn Valley Creative Arts, Lee Valenta representing the Auburn Symphony Orchestra, Ashley Schalow Cultural Arts Assistant Staff and Carola Parker introduced themselves as guests of the commission meeting. II. Auburn Arts Organization Update Lela Brugger and Florence Kruger representing the Auburn Valley Creative Arts provided an update on the progress that the organization has made since calling their first public meeting in April 2010. The group is now having regular meetings on the 2"d Thursday of every month from 7 - 8:30, have elected an Executive Committee, is in the process of applying for their non-profit tax status with the State of Washington, and are actively planning a fundraiser, annual benefit and dinner on Saturday, November 20, 2010, 6pm in the Rainier Room, Truitt Building. Lela Brugger noted several ways in which individuals and the commission could potentially support their efforts. Discussion continued. Commissioner Nancy Colson, introduced Lee Valenta of the Auburn Symphony Orchestra and provided a brief history of the formation of the organization. Lee Valenta provided an overview of the 2010-2011 Season and noted the changes from previous years. Due to funding, a holiday concert will not be offered this year. An exciting new program is scheduled to take place in February 2011 entitled "Beyond the Score". Embracing education as an audience development strategy, "Beyond the Score" will use multi-media techni9ues and education approaches to tell the story of the music that will then be played in full in the 2" half of the performance. "Beyond the Score" is based on a successful model at the Chicago Symphony and also is planned for the Seattle Symphony this season. Commissioner Colson noted the importance of the City's financial support of the Symphony. Discussion continued. Ill. Retreat Topics/Agenda Planning Maija McKnight noted that at the September meeting a question arose regarding the possibility of a retreat for the commission. Ms. McKnight provided a history of topics that have been covered in the past years and suggested that four of the agenda items can be led by the Visual, Public, Performing, Education Committees. This will allow for the individual committees to thoughtfully consider what topics are most relevant to that specific program area and invite appropriate staff/experts to speak to those themes. Additional agenda items will be included, but discussion around the main program areas of the Arts division will be the main focus. Tanya Rottle inquired if it's possible to do a survey to receive input from the public regarding the arts programming in Auburn. Councilmember Wagner noted that the City conducts an annual public survey. Commissioner Colson noted that input and guidance from Mayor, Council and the Planning and Community Development Committee is an important part of the discussion. Councilmember Wagner noted that the downtown developer, Spencer Alpert may be interested in the public art discussions. Discussion continued. IV. Committee Reports No committees convened in September. V. New Other/Business Maija McKnight noted the annual joint meeting with the Arts Commission oversight Council Committee will be on Monday, October 11, 5pm in the City Hall Annex. The Downtown Redevelopment Council Committee will be meeting on Tuesday, October 12, 4pm at the City Hall Annex with Sheila Klein in attendance providing a update on the plans for the City Hall Plaza Public Art. Julie Brewer reported that BRAVO sales have already reached $20,000 and that the first two performances were both nearly sold out. Selection for the 2011 Galleries will be on October 20 with a selection panel of 7 individuals. Commissioner Rottle noted that at the next meeting it should be determined a location for the December meeting. In the past the December meeting has been a meeting followed by a holiday gathering. Ms. McKnight also noted that nominations for 2011 Vice Chair will be held, with voting at the December meeting by secret ballot.
