Re: 15th St SW Interurban Crossing Improvements

Purpose
The purpose of this memo is to provide information to the Public Works Committee
regarding the upcoming improvements to the Interurban trail crossing at 15th St SW.
Background
Staff has been reviewing potential improvements to all the Interurban Trail crossings
over the past year. 15th St SW has been the priority due to the high traffic volumes,
accident history and geometrical challenges. Staff has completed the design, procured
the equipment and contracted the installation of pedestrian activated warning beacons
which should be completed in the next several weeks. This solar powered Rectangular
Rapid Flashing Beacon warning system has been
shown to be the most effective warning light
a system at mid block type pedestrian crossings.
Public Information
Prior to activating the warning lights an
informational flyer will be posted on the city's
website and near the crossing to educate users
on the proper procedure for operating the warning
lights and crossing the road.
Funding
These improvements are funded out of the Traffic
Calming Improvements Program.
