HomeMy WebLinkAbout01-04-2011Minutes Tuesday, January 4, 2011 2:00 p.m. Conference Room Parks, Arts & Recreation Administration Building Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 2:35 pm by Len Elliott. Those Board members attending in addition to Mr. Elliott were Lonnie Sundal, Karen Wright, and Bryce Landrud. Also present at the meeting were Parks Maintenance Manager Mike Miller, Environmental Protection Manager Chris Anderson, Parks Horticulturist Kirk Hadley and Parks Secretary Julie Mehl. Minutes December meeting minutes approved. III. Correspondence/Public Input A. Len has not seen the tree article yet in the Auburn Reporter. He called the paper and they said they ran out of space and will run it in the future. IV. Old Business A. Significant Tree Nomination - Tree Board is in agreement of nominating the Copper Beech tree at Mountain View Cemetery. B. Neighborhood Tree Grant - Mike Miller has not heard whether we have been approved for grant funds. The group is hoping to plant the last week-end in January on Park Avenue. C. Gymnasium Update - Concrete will be poured tomorrow, weather permitting. The temperature must be above freezing. There will be a climbing wall on the back side of the building with artwork. April 7 is the completion date for the project. We don't have an official "grand opening" date scheduled yet. D. Tree Programs Coordination Meeting - Kirk Hadley reports they are working on an article regarding tree care. They are also reviewing the city tree ordinance to see if it needs to be updated. AUBURN *MORE THAN YOU IMAGINED . V. New Business A. 'Mike Miller received an email from a citizen in the Hollis Hills Neighborhood on the west hill. She requested that an article be published regarding the dangerous practice of topping trees. Mike will communicate we did a press release on December 23. B.. Kirk Hadley recommended. the following website for Tree. Board members www.treeboardu.org. VI. Board ;Recommendations/Input - VII. Department Report A. The recent windstorm - The city lost 10 - 12 trees. B. Soccer lights at Game Farm Park are complete. C. Seventh Day Adventist volunteers will be planting 250 shrubs on the White River Trail on Friday, ]anuary 7"'. D. The city is currently IooRing for an area to be designated "ofF leash" for dogs. A committee is being formed for the project. E. Chris Anderson reports that using the Cartegraph system for tree inquiries has been going well. The city had multiple calls after the recent wind storm. The Cartegraph system will be a tremendous aid in tracking tree related issues. Chris is hoping the communication regarding tcee related issues will improve when we begin to get information out to the public regarding tree care as well as easily accessible infocmation on our website. F. Environmental Park Update - Chris Anderson reports the city is working on Habitat with native plantings, enhancing the interior of the park, and working on a buffer for Hwy 167. Bryce mentioned Hylebos in Federal Way gets pressure washed twice per year by a group of volunteers. G. Mike Miller received an emait from a representative of the Russian community. Their group would like to donate some Birch trees to the city. Mike mentioned we would need a large area for Birch trees. H. Bryce notified the board that previous Significant Tree owner Marilyn Dollinger did not receive a plaque as we previously assumed. She received a. framed proclamation. VIII.
