The City of Auburn set the following goals as part of the 2001 Water Comprehensive Plan. • Reduce unaccounted for water to 10% or less • Become a community leader in water conservation • Provide service and support to customers that want to conserve water • Participate in regional water planning efforts • Meet or exceed conservation regulations of the Department of Health or other appropriate regulatory agencies In 2007 the City continued efforts to reduce unaccounted for water, performing leak detection and repair, metering hydrant use, and fixing breaks. It is estimated that leaks repaired in 2007 will save 14,191,200 gallons per year. Auburn’s unaccounted for water was estimated to be 8.7% in 2007. The City provided information and support to customers interested in reducing their outdoor water use through Natural Yard Care workshops sponsored by the City in association with King County. The City’s Water Utility and Solid Waste Utility partnered with Puget Sound Energy to conduct an education program in Auburn’s schools that taught how choices made by the students had consequences on the environment (including water use). In addition, the City’s web-site provides information on conservation as well as a link to the Partnership for Water Conservation web-site which provides extensive information on indoor and outdoor conservation. Auburn is currently updating its comprehensive water plan and will be setting goals that are consistent with the Water Use Efficiency Rule requirements. The Water Division repaired leaks as they were detected.
