Meeting Minutes Presenf: Cary Davidson, Linda Elliott, Patricia Judd, DeNae-McGee, Tanya Rottle, David Sader, Ronie Schwend, Donna Smart, Greg Watson, Councilmember Rich Wagner, Arts Coordinator Maija McKnight, Arts and Events Manager Julie Brewer Excused: Deborah Deal Unexcused: Heidi Harris 1. Call to Order, Approval of Minutes, Introductions and Approval of Minutes: Vice Chair Donna Smart called the meeting to order at 4:30 pm. Tanya Rottle moved to approve the May 2011 meeting minutes and Ronie Schwend seconded the motion. All approved. Motion approved Vice Chair Smart noted that the order in the agenda.would.be changed from the agenda. II. Public Art Project Overview Staff and Tanya Rottle, Chair of the Public Art Committee and Public Art Committee Members provided an overview of current, public art projects including: Clean Sweep - Utility Boxes (artisf Rachael Dotson), Clean Sweep - Painted Mural (artist Mauricio Robalino), Clean Sweep - Installation of panel murals that were created by Urban Art Works in 2010 Summer that have been displayed at Les Gove on construction fencing moved downtown across.the street from the Sound Transit Plaza, A'uburn Riverside - Artist in Residence/Wall Mural (artist Rachael Dotson), Metal topographic map by Bruce Myers is in progress and following the construction schedule for the project. Maija McKnight noted that an application was submitted to the National Endowment for~the Arts for a Challenge America Fast Track grant. Notification of funding will occur in January 2012, and if received a mural project for the railway corridor will commence in early spring 2012. Staff discussed the possibility of Vacant Storefront Art Displays in Aubum's Downtown area. Cultural arts staff is working with the Planning division to spearhead this_ project. The project would potentially be funded by the 4Culture funding received. Discussion continued and commission expressed support. Staff presented a model from St. Paul, MN of "Everyday Poems for City Sidewalks" a potential project for the future, poems that are collected from community members through a poetry contest are then imprinted into sidewalks as they get replaced throughout the City. This is a partnership with the Public Wocks Department. Commissioner Greg Watson noted that potentially also using existing poems would be a link to the rich history of the area. Discussion continued. Staff noted that the potential of coordinating Parking Day, a temporary art project that you turn parking spaces into artist created Parks, may be planned in coordination with the BRAVO showcase event on Friday, September 16. Discussion of this project will continue with the Public Art Committee and be reported back to the full commission. III. Support of Local Arts Efforts and Organizations Maija McKnight provided a brief oyerview of the re-grant process and distributed the application paperwork. Seven applications were received, and recommended funding amounts were discussed. The City of Aubum receives funds from 4Culture, through King County lodging tax revenue, for support of the Arts in Auburn. Aubum International Farmers Market, Pacific Ballroom Dance, Great Westem Community Concert Association, Uniquely Auburn, White River Valley Museum, and Good OP Days were recipients of funding. Discussion continued to why various other arts groups/organizations did not apply. Tanya moved to approve funding level as proposed; David'Sadec seconded the motion.
