King County council unanimously approved submitting to the voters at the. Augu"st primary election a ballot measure to support a continuation of the expiring Vetecans and Human Services Levy. This levy, if approved by the voters, would. continue a 5 cents per $1,000 assessed valuation levy with one half of the proceeds from the levy being used to supportveterans and the their fam'ilies in king county and_ the other half be'ing used fo support general human_ service programs in king county. The value of this levy and the benefts of fhe fiunds generated by it warrant consideration by the ,cifiiens of ' king counfy and deserve the support of those citizens. The Aubum Cify Council is authorized to take action collectively at a public meeting so long as compliance with RCW 42.17.130 are met, to endorse ' or oppose ballot measures. The City Council would want to support this measure because of the value to #he veterans and the King County human services, at a relatively minor costs, and as a continuation of the.expiring 20051evy. Staff: Meetin Date: _ Item Number. AUBURN*'MORE THAN YQU IMAGINED . RESOLUTION NO. 4 7 2 8 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUBURN, WASHINGTON, SUPPORTING ' . THE KING COUNTY VETERANS AND HUMAN SERVICES LEVY WHEREAS, the King County Council approved legislation sending the King County Veferans and Human Services'levy to the voters to appear on the August primary election ballot; and WHEREAS, the King County Veterans and Human Services levy has been unanimously approved by the regional policy committee, the budget and fiscal management commiitee and the full county council, initial_ly submitted to the voters in 2005 and again being submitted to the voters this year because the prior levy will expire; and ~ WHEREAS, voters will be given the opportunity fo deeide whether they want to continue forward with the current levy in which half of the proceeds would be dedicated exclusively for programs to assist Veterans and their families, as a reauthorization of an existing levy which has served thousands of people and veterans throughout the county and the other half supporting general human service programs in king county; and WHEREAS, if approved by the voters, the measure would continue the existing levy for an additional 6 years at the current rate of 5 cents per $1,000 assessed valuation; and, WHEREAS, RCW 42::17:130 authorizes city councils to take collective action regarding ballot measures appearing before the voters so long as the action is taken at a public meeting, the intended action is identified on the Resolution No. 4728 July 14, 2011 Page 1 of 3 . agenda and where the opportunity for opposing views is given to attendees at the public meeting; and ~ WHEREAS; in light of the value and the benefits to the King County citizens and the veterans of the county, it is appropriate that the City Council support this ballot measure as permitted pursuant to RGW 42.17.130. : NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUBURN, HEREBY RESOLVES as follows: Section 1. Thafi the King County Veterans and Human Secvices levy, coming before the voters at the August; 2011, primary election, is supported by the City Council. Section 2. That the Mayor is authorized #o implement such administrative procedures as may be necessary to carry out the directives of this ~ legislation. Section 3.
