Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 2:06 pm by Bryce Landrud. Those Board members
attending in addition to Mr. Landrud were Maggie Greenslit, Jan Speer, Len Elliott and Karen
Wright. Also present at the meeting were Parks Maintenance Manager Mike Miller, Parks
Horticulturist Kirk Hadley, Environmental Planner Jamie Kelly and Parks Secretary Julie Mehl.
Minutes
May meeting minutes were approved.
III. Correspondence/Public Input
A. Kirk Hadley reports 2500 to 3000 plants will be planted at the Environmental Park. Jamie
Kelly is getting new plant list.
IV. Old Business
A. Article - the board reviewed the article Jan Speer has written. Maggie commented that
dead branches can be cut any time. Newly planted trees need to be watered weekly
throughout first growing season June through August. Bryce added rarely should an entire
tree be pruned deep into primary branches. Karen added the goal of pruning in the summer is
to modify, enhance or remove broken limbs. Kirk shared the ideal time for pruning is when all
leaves have fallen off the tree(s). Jan will make changes/updates, send to Bryce and Len, then
forward to Dana Hinman in Multimedia.
B. Neighborhood tree planting grant - Tschonoskii Crabapple would be a good fit for 9t" street
as it is a narrow growing tree. Kirk reports the project has been approved. We are in the
process of finding out who owns the property. Mike Miller will try to schedule an Eagle Scout
project for the planting of 1.5" - 2" caliper trees. The trees on 2nd & K (previous neighborhood
grant trees) look good, we have not lost one yet.
C. Significant tree discussion - on 'F' St SE across from Washington Elementary there is a
Katsura tree (Kirk evaluated Maggie's photos to determine tree type). The Red Oaks on
AUBURN* MORE THAN YOU IMAGINED
Way N have been topped in the mid 80's, may not be tie best choice for significant tree since
the Tree Board promotes not topping trees. The board will make final decision at 7uly meeting.
V. New Business
A. )amie Kelly, new Environmerrtal Planner for the City previously worked for a small
conservation firm. The ty needed someone with wetland experience for the boardwalk at the
Aubum Environmental Park. Jamie is currently working on mitigation for impact on Main &
Westem for the boardwalk to birding tower. The tower will be 1200— 1700 linear feet to Main
Street. The environmental park is located west of the Interurban Trail.
