HomeMy WebLinkAbout06-07-2011Parks and Recreation Board Meeting Minutes Tuesday, June 2011 5:30 p.m. Auburn Senior Activity Center, Rotary Room Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 5:38 pm by Michael Hassen. Those members present in addition to Mr. Hassen were Vicki Gilthvedt, John Webley and Greg Dobbs. Department staff members present were Parks Director Daryl Faber, Parks Maintenance Manager Mike Miller, White River Valley Museum Volunteer Coordinator Janet Wells and Parks Secretary Julie Mehl. II. Minutes The minutes of the May meeting were motioned for approval by Vicki Gilthvedt, seconded by Greg Dobbs. III. Committee Member Input A. Daryl Faber introduced Janet Wells, Volunteer Coordinator for the White River Valley Museum and Mike Miller, Parks Maintenance Manager. IV. Correspondence/Public Input V. Old Business A. Dykstra Footbridge - a formal request to deny has been sent to the Harkey's as they don't have sufficient civic accomplishments to qualify for renaming the bridge after their family. We can post a pedestal/plaque giving Mr. Harkey credit. Michael Hassen motioned to formally deny renaming the bridge and adding the pedestal, John Webley seconds. B. Off leash area - #1 Roegner park will include a farm type fence because it is less expensive and looks less industrial. There will be two sections, one for small dogs (1/3 acre) and one for large dogs (5/6 acre). There will be two service gates (double entry system). If it's a hit we have two plus acres to utilize. We will have pooper scooper boxes & bags. City Council favored Roegner Park and Auburndale as possible off leash areas. Mike Miller is in the process of scheduling an Eagle Scout Group or volunteer group to install fencing. There will be a kiosk so folks can post dog related items. There is no potable water there now, may be issue in future. The hope is for a local group to adopt the park and raise funds for extra pooper bags to alleviate work and expense for the city. VI. New Business A. Summer camps & programs - Parks offers Elementary age day camp, Teen Trip Thing and Birthday AUBURN *MORE THAN YOU IMAGINED B. Auburn Environmental Park—The city received a grant for a boardwalk from the bird tower �/a mile to Main St. C. For the third consecutive year we received the Playful City USA/ Kaboom award. D. The city will use $25,000 in grant funds for new playground equipment (both areas) at Game Farm Park. Park Board will be involved in planning for the equipment. E. The city will use a 550,000 block grant for new playground equipment at Shaughnessy Park (by casino). There will be a basketball court, pickle ball court, 0-5 playground, 6-10 playground, small soccer field (3 on 3), no restroom and street parking. The park is eligible for a federal grant as it is located in a low income area. F. There will be a new off leash area by Fall at Cedar Lanes Park. A house was tor� down, may become a community garden. G. White River Trail —400' mural was painted by Auburn Riverside students and artist. VII. Department Report A. Vicki Gilthvedt asked about the progress on the gymnasium. Director Faber responded it is coming along nicely and he is happy with the design, it has a good acoustic feel. It should be complete in three weeks and house full programs for summer and fall. We have a bocce group event scheduled as well as a wine &caviar event. Park Board will need to consider approving alcohol use at gym. B. ]anet Wells with the White River Valley Museum says they are always looking for volunteers to work one 3 hour shift once per month. The main duties would be to meet and greet customers, run cash register and act as tour guide for school and church groups. A minimum of 22 volunteers are needed for special events. The annual training is held in January. Each quarter the exhibit changes, volunteers are updated. The Mary Olson Farm is having their Grand Opening on June 18"' from 11:00 am — 2:00 pm. They will offer wagon rides from the parking lot to the farm. Heritage kits can be rented or we can educate in the class room(s). Hops & Crops will be held in September. Audio tours are available for children and adults, VIII.
