CALL TO ORDER The April Human Services Committee Meeting was called to order on April 25, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at One Main Street, Auburn, WA. Committee Members qresent: Suzanne Limric, Bette Van Gasken, Chuck Booth, Lela Brugger, Virginia Lloyd-Baron, Tony Ladner and Daryl Thompson Committee Members not present: Michael Harbin, JoAnne Walters and Barbara Derda Staff Dresent: Commun'ity Senrices Manager Michael Hursh and Project Assistant Kirsten Reynolds ~ Guests present: Mayor,Rete Lewis and Senior CenterSupervisor Radine Lozier II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES • Review of March 7, 2011 minutes , o Member Booth motioned to accept the March 7, 2011 minutes; Member Van Gasken seconded the motion: _ • The March.7, 2011 minutes were approved: . III. AGENDA ~ Committee Memberships , Community Services Manager. Michael Hursh reviewed the Human Services Committee appointment roster; Committee Members up for reappointment were Barbara' Derda, Daryl Thompson, JoAnne Walters, Suzanne Limric and Virginia Lloyd-Baron. All Committee Members pcesent at this meeting were in agreement to continue secving on the Human Services Committee. - o Member Ladner motioned to accept the reappointed positions for an additional term; Member Brugger seconded the motion. • All members were in favor, the motion was approved: • . Senior Center Presentation Senior Center Supervisor Radine Lozier spoke about several services and programs offered including, but not Iimited to, their partnership with the temporary Cold Weather Sheltec. When the weather took a dramatic dip to 25 degrees the Senior Center open their ,.doors to everyone and operated as a warming shelter all day. The Aubum Food Bank and the Senior Center collaborated to serve an additional meal that day. The Senior Center and the Food Bank made the Cold Weather SFielter a success, with nearly no operational glitches. ' TheSenior Center continues to partner with other agencies to offer more services and increased programs; hours for the Auburn . RESPITE program have been increased, teeth . cleanings are offered at a discounted rate, program accessibility for Senior Services - Volunteer Transportation and Meals on Wheels, healthy eating lectures are spotlighted, a pet food bank is operated and a Veterans Adminisfration representative is available the frst Monday of each month from 8 a.m. - 10 a,m. Ms. Lozier highlighted the Senior Center's daily lunch, with a suggested $3 donation, it's offered Monday - Friday stacting at 11:30 a.m. For anyone under age 50 lunch costs only $5.75. • CDBG / Potential Projects . Community Services Manager Michael Hursh announced the City's CDBG funding was approved through Congress, however their budget was cut 16.2% for all cities from previous years. In the past City of Auburn received $406,000 in 2009, $425,000 in 2010 and $420,000 for2011. . . Mr: Hursh is proposing an amendment to the City's prior Annual Action Plan projects for Community Developrnent Block Grant (CDBG) reallocation. One projecf to be implemented, once the reallocation moves forward, includes a$50,000 playground e ui ment u rade at Sha hn P q p pg _ ug essy ark, located near Chinook Elementa . Another ry,opportunity underway is to secure a small lake for public'use that will provide a park 1ocated on Auburn's west hill: Additionally, there is an economic development opportunity #o bring a special traumatic brain injury treafinent facility right here in Auburn. • Mayor Lewis Update City of Auburn Mayor Pete Lewis announced during these hard times we are seeing a trend of agencies merging and disassembling; Mayor Lewis stated we expect this to persist as funding continues to drop: Griefinrorks is unfortunately no longer opetating but will continue . to operate their website as a resource for those in need: www:ariefworks.ora. ACAP officially announced they will merge with local non-profit Aubum Youth Resources. Mayor Lewis continues to actively participate in a leade'rship role with the Suburban Cities group; a group that is focused to securing funds stay in tFie south end of King County. IV. NEXT MEETING The next meeting is scheduled for May, 23, 2011. V.
