CALL TO ORDER The Human Services Committee Meeting was called to order on Monday, June 27, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at One Main Street,Aubum, WA. Committee Members oresent: Suzanne Cimric,Chuck Booth,Virginia Lloyd-Baron,JoAnne Walters and Barbara Derda Committee Members not oresent: Michael Harbin, Bette Van Gasken, DarylThompson, Lela Brugger and Tony Ladner Staff oresent: Community Services Manager Michaei Hursh, Proj.Assistant Kirsten Reynolds and Senior Center Supervisar Radine Lozier Visitors oresent: South Sound Dream Center Executive Director Rick Cameron II: APPROVAL OF MINUTES • Review of May 23, 2011 minutes o Member Booth motioned to accept the May 23, 2011 minutes; Member Derda seconded the mo#ion. All Committee Members were in favor of adopting the minutes as submitted. ■ The May 23, 2011 minutes were approved III. AGENDA • South Sound Dream Center Rick Cameron, Executive Director and co-founder of the South Sound Dream Center (SSDC) discussed the agency's programs. SSDC implements programs for basic assistance such as food, shelter and clothing. They help elderly, marginalized and individuals with disabilities. The agency helps to establish life skills training to help tiuild healthy families and restore broken relationships. They provide mentoring to youth through various activities and "one on one" relationships. Mr. Cameron presented a variety of programs that SSCD is operating, including but not limited to, Child Sponsorships; Metro Kidz, Adopt a Block and Alive and Free. Metro Kidz assists youth to develop a relationship with Chnst`by taking to the streets in a way that kids can relate to, and through home visits with the families Saturday City Help brings people together to make a difference in their city and change others lives. Hundreds of lunche.s are made and delivered to homeless camps and low income motels in the area. The Alive and Freeyouth program focuses on disarming violence in youth after they've received a felony criminal charge on their record; youth are:identified through school districts, SSCD is currently partnering with the Seattle YMCA to operate this program. SSDC is open Monday to Fridayfrom 9am to 3pm and on Saturdays from 9am to 2:30pm; SSDC currenUy has five staff members for their Aubum location and a total of 35 volunteers between their Federal Way and Aubum locations. • CDBG Formula Allocation Mr: Hursh discussed the allocation of CDBG funding from HUD (Housing and Urban Development). HUD determines funding based off a City's total population counts. The most recent Census numbers reported the low-moderate income population in Aubum dropped from 55% in 201D to 49% in 2011. • Additional Topics o Summer Free Lunch Rroqram — every summer the Aubum School District puts on a free summer lunch program, this year the Gity of Auburn decided to help produce a marketing flyer for the program and tra,nslate it into Spanish. Meals are provided at no charge to attending children ages 1-18 at 44 different locations around the city through the USDA in partnership with the Aubum School Dis4rict. o Free Meals in South Kina Countv Flver — a new resource flyer was created by the City of Aubum to promote free cooked meals in and around'Auburn targeting adults and families in need. Meals are available every night of the week. The flyer is being distributed to key locations in the community to get the word out. o Aubum Senior Center - Senior Center Supervisor Radine Lozier handed out new programs for activities and gave a brief status update on stuff happening at the Aubum Senior Center. IV. NEXT MEETING The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, July25, 2011. V.
