HomeMy WebLinkAbout6383 ORDINANCE NO. 6 3 8 3 AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUBURN, WASHINGTON, AMENDING TITLE 2 OF THE AUBURN GITY CODE BY CREATING A NEW CHAPTER, "2.82 POET LAUREATE" WHEREAS; the study of literature forms a vital part of our shared and diverse culture; and WHEREAS, 4he City of Aubum has an active and united communiiy; and WHEREA3, the City Council believes that the appointment of a Poet Laureate wiil encourage the appreciation of poetry and literary life in Aubum. NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUBURN, WASHINGTON, DO ORDAIN as follows: Section 7. Amendment to Citv.Code. That Title 2 of the Auburn Ciry Code be and the same here6y is amended 6y adding a new Chapter, "2.82 Poet Laureate" to read as follows: 2.82 Poet Laureate ' 2.82.010 Position established - Duties. 2.82.020 Qual�cations, Appointrnent, and Term of Office. 2.82.010 Position established- Duties. There is established in the Citythe position of Poet Laureate. The Poet Laureate shall encourage the writing„reading, and performance of poetry within the City. 2.82.020 Qualfications, Appointrnent, and Term of Office. The Poet Laureate shali be at least 18 years old, be still living at the time of his or her appointment, have been a resident of Aubum for at least one year, and shall have demonstrated the following: 1. Excellence as evidenced by the submitted poetry sample. 2. Exemplary professionalism as evidenced 6y an established history of publication in joumals and books, special honors, awards, fellowships, and/or other recognition; 3. Advancement of poetry in Aubum communities as evidenced by a history of activity in Aubum's literary community through readings, publications; public presentations and/or teaching. Employees (or members of their immediate family or household) of the City of Aubum, and members or staff (or members of their immediate family or household) are ineligible. B. The Poet Laureate shall be appbinted by the Mayor f�om three finalists chosen by the Auburn Arts Commission. The Arts Commission is authorized to promulgate rules and procedures consistent with this Chapter for the purpose of conducting the nomination process. G The term of appointment shall be for three years. Provided, that the Mayor may remove the incumbent without cause. D. The Poet Laureate shall serve virithout compensation. Section 2. Imalementation. The Mayor is hereby authorized to implemerrt such administrative procedures as may be necessary to carry out the directions of this legislation. Ordinance No. 6383 October 4, 2011 Page 2 of 3 Section 3. Severabilitv. The provisions of this ordinance are declared to be separate and severable. The invalidity of any clause, serrtence, paragraph, subdivision, section or'portion of this ordinance, or the invalidit�r of the application thereof to any person or circumstance shalf not affect the validity of the remainder of this ordinance; orthe validity of its application to other persons or circumstances. Sectian 4. Effective.date. This Ordinance shall take effect and be in force five days from and after its passage, approval and publication as provided by law.
