Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 2:09 pm by Bryce Landrud. Those board members
attending in addition to Mr. Landrud were Arnie Galli and Maggie Greenslit. There is no
quorum. Also present at the meeting were Parks Maintenance Manager Mike Miller,
Environmental Planner Jamie Kelly and Parks Secretary Julie Mehl.
Minutes
December minutes were reviewed but not approved as there is not a quorum.
III. Correspondence /Public Input
Mike Miller has seen a pamphlet in the past, a walking tour of different buildings. Julie Mehl
will see if she can locate.
IV. Old Business
Significant tree — The tree near Radio Shack is owned by someone currently living in New York.
The board agreed it would be better to award a local citizen. Bryce will contact Kirk about the
tree on 2nd & O. Mike Miller asked if anyone knew if other cities give plaques to Significant Tree
owners. Bryce has seen a medal given by other cities. Mike suggested we track all past
significant trees including history & photo's. They could be assembled and taken to City Hall
for citizens to review and enjoy.

Bryce suggested we get Len something for his many years of service on the Urban Tree Board.
He has been a member since the board began. All agreed.

Bryce read a great article in P/antAmnestyregarding year round pruning, he felt it had great
tips for our climate. Will'bring mpies for board #o review.
VII. DepartmenL Report _
Mike Miller reports the 2012 Arbor Day Tree will be planted south of the SeniorCenter. They
are considering a deciduous free, perhaps Red Bud. Maggie Greenslit suggests Amelanchier,
they have berries which the birds love and beaufifu� color in fall.
Jamie Kelly handed out Ordiriance 6387 and Aubum Gty Code 15.74 regarding landscaping,
plant materials and unnecc_esary disturbance of natural vegetation in new developments. Stuart
Wagner, Planner may be able to speak to the board at the February meeting.
Bryce questioned development requirements from plantings 20 + years ago where a tree is
perhaps pushing up against a fence. Jamie referred him to page five of Ordinance 6387. All
board members received a copy of Ord 6387 as well as ACC Chapter 15J4 fi-om ]amie Kelly.
Jamie reports on the status ofthe Auburn Environmental Park; the final completion date will be
in February ocearly March: The boardwalk is 2/3 complete antl will have a few more planting
days. Jamie also shared that the funder, Recreation Conservation Office is very happy with ttie
park and will issue a press release soon.
Maggie Greenslit is involved in a Washington State University graduate study on balled/burlap
root trees vs. bare root trees. Bryce predicts bare root wili win.
Mike Miller gave an overvieVu on the various projects in 2011: Exercise equipment installation
at Les Gove Park, new dog park at Roegner, Pioneer Cemetery tree removal, Arbor Day tree
(Katsura), Eagle Scout planting of Dogwoods on Park Ayenue, Cherry Trees at Les Gove and
Crab Apples along 9"' St SE. Completion of the gymnasium, Shaughnessy Park improvements,
Game Farm Park tennis court improvements.
Mike also reports on upcoming 2012 projects: Adding water source, benches and a covered
area to dog park at Roegner, adding covered area to playground at Les Gove, new play
equipment and patio at Game Farm Park, Arbor Day tree planting at Les Gove.
