Annual Board Orientation
1 February, 2012,1:30 to 4 p.m.

Call to order and Approval of Minutes
The meeting was called to order at 1:40 by President Megan Evans.
President Evans welcomed members and asked for approval of the minutes. MOTION CARRIED
President Evans provided a brief overview of the meeting agenda, & pointed out materials distributed. The
board members introduced themselves to the group as a whole. Photos of board members will be taken
following the meeting to update the bulletin board. Mike Miller, albeit excused from this meeting, provided
delicious cookies for the board's enjoyment.
III. Orientation to Serving on a Board
Patricia Cosgrove, Director of White River Valley Museum provided a power point presentation as guidance to
serving on this tiny but mighty board; emphasizing the White River Museum's in -depth & comprehensive
commitment to community and the board's influence shaping the museum's future, as well as, referencing the
financial aspects of board service responsibility. This presentation included a lesson on reading financial
statements.
IV. Plans for 2012 and On
Rachael Burrum, Curator of Education and Erin Hash, Education Assistant reviewed the upcoming exhibit
and education schedules encouraging board member involvement. Board members enjoyed engaging in a
3rd grade curricular activity, related to comparative cultures of indigenous peoples of Washington, which is
launching this year.
Hillary Pittenger, Assistant Curator of Collections provided information on collections care & selection,
encouraging member participation on the collections committee. Samples of recent acquisitions were
reviewed.
Janet Wells, Volunteer and Facilities Coordinator addressed the roles board members can play as
volunteers both on a regular basis with museum greeting, gift shop keeping, and educational tour guides,
and through the provision of event supports during Hops & Crops scheduled for the 15th of September or
on Independence Day on the 4th of July. Board members will be notified of training opportunities. At this
time, Janet trains and coordinates the efforts of about 60 volunteers.
V. Committee Descriptions
Patricia Cosgrove provided a brief review of each of the committee functions and expectations, for the purpose
of initiating board members toward selection of service area.

Board members indicated interested in serving on select committees. Committee chairs and meeting schedules
are to be determined.
