Call to Order, Approval of Minutes, Introductions and Approval of Minutes: Chair Greg Watson called the meeting to order at 4:35 pm. Agenda addition for a informational presentation by Rachael Burrum, Curator of Education at the White River Valley Museum about summer programming at the Mary Olsen Farm. Tanya Rottle moved to approve the April 2012 meeting minutes with the typo correction in discussion item 3, change from "Potable" to "Portable" and Patricia Judd seconded the motion. All approved. Motion approved. II. Informational Presentation: Summer Programming at the Mary Olson Farm Rachael Burrum, White River Valley Museum Curator of Education, provided an overview of the summer programming that is being planned at the Mary Olson Farm. The Farm will be open to the public every weekend over the Summer and the variety of public programming opportunities. III. Retreat Planning Maija McKnight handed out the retreat summary notes compiled from the 2011 retreat with the intent to discuss at the June meeting for additional retreat planning topics for 2012. IV. Public Art Discussion Maija McKnight handed out a public art opportunities listing that was compiled as part of the April Commission meeting. The commission discussed priorities for this year's expenditure towards the creation of new public art. Lea Hill was identified as top priority because 1) it is an area that does not have any public art located within the neighborhood 2) the new construction of the park allows for artist involvement to have input on placement/park design for an integrated approach. Susan Black, SB &A Landscape Architects will be attending the public art committee meeting on May 8t" and would like to move forward based on the conversation during the committee meeting. Leslie Moore moved that the commission let the Public Art Committee determine if the Lea Hill Park is a priority for the recommendation of funding for a new public artwork. Coleen Maloney seconded the motion. Motion Approved. V. Clean Sweep Mural Design Review Maija McKnight provided an overview of the mural that would be created as part of the Clean Sweep event on May 5, 2012 in downtown Auburn. The design and planning process took into consideration volunteer participation, the property owners comments as well as with the Poet Laureate, Dick Brugger's poem that will be painted as the main focus of the mural. The artist Chris Sharp was selected from the mural artist roster that was developed through prior calls, based on his experience and expertise with typography and large scale signs. Examples of his prior work was distributed for context, and a mock -up of the mural was distributed. VI. ArtWalk Update Maija McKnight noted that the 2nd Art Walk would be occurring the weekend of May 11 and 12. The Art Walk is a community volunteer organized effort. The 13 volunteers meet regularly to coordinate this event and the City supports this project through the Arts Commission re- granting process (granted $2000 for the creation of a banner and a -frame boards for signage) as well staff support that assists with the publicity and marketing of the event. Mary Ellen Bowers was introduced as a member of the planning committee, who explained the event and shared some of the goals including support of local artists, connecting businesses to artists, and working to create a vibrant downtown. Ms. Bowers noted that the Auburn Valley Creative Arts organization is strongly represented in the planning committee and various efforts that are connected with the art walk. VII. Updates /Announcements /Upcoming Events Maija McKnight read a letter that was received addressed to the Arts Commission from a young student sharing her love of art.
