HomeMy WebLinkAbout06-05-2012 (2)City of Auburn Arts Commission, City Hall Annex, One Main, Conference Room 1 Tuesday, June 5, 2012 Meeting Minutes Present: Greg Watson, Cary Davidson, Debby Deal, Nickole Evans, Colleen Maloney, Leslie Moore, Dan Norman, Tanya Rottle, Arts Coordinator Maija McKnight, Council Liaison Rich Wagner Excused: Patricia Judd, Heidi Harris, Ronie Schwend, DeNae McGee I. Call to Order, Approval of Minutes, Introductions and Approval of Minutes: Chair Greg Watson called the meeting to order at 4:35 pm. Leslie Moore moved to approve the May 2012 meeting minutes. Nickole Evans seconded the motion. All approved. Motion approved. II. Retreat Planning The Arts Commission retreat will be on Saturday, June 23, 10 — 2 pm at the Auburn Senior Center, Weese Room. A draft agenda was distributed for discussion. Comments included potentially including an overview of the recent Council retreat, possibilities for promoting artist live /work space, working with the Planning department to coordinate efforts, and various items. Staff noted, that the retreat is intended for discussion of broad topics and work towards determining, defining five -year goals. Maija McKnight will distribute the notes from the 2011 retreat prior to the 2012 retreat. III. Public Art Discussion Commissioner Leslie Moore reported Public Art Committee members met with Susan Black, the Landscape Architect working with City staff to design the new Lea Hill Park. An overview of the park project was discussed and the committee forwarded a recommendation to Mayor for the expenditure of these funds on a new public art project at Lea Hill Park and a draft Call to Artists has been written by staff and will be reviewed at the upcoming public art committee meeting. Commissioner Moore noted that the draft call -to- artists describes the desired artwork as "an exterior, human scale, sculptural work that complements the built elements of the site, prior site use, and support the function of a neighborhood park. Staff noted that the timeline for this project would complement the development of the park and be fabricated and installed by Spring 2013. Staff Maija McKnight provided an overview of the activities associated with the recent Clean Sweep event. The volunteer event had citizens working to paint a mural as well as various public art `interventions' along West Main. IV. Updates /Announcements /Upcoming Events Staff Maija McKnight provided an overview of the Art Walk that occurred May 4, 5, 2012 in downtown Auburn. The Art Walk is planned by a committee of volunteers, and arts staff is one member. A quick summary of ArtRageous was provided which will be held downtown on Saturday, August 4, 11 -6 pm. Changes will include the addition of a beer garden, main stage with music that will serve to `announce' the BRAVO Season, and working with the Art Walk committee to have art on display in various businesses throughout the downtown core. The Seattle Opera has been working closely with Ilako Elementary School as part of the Opera in Schools Artist in Residency Program. On Friday, June 8t" the year end presentation will occur with the third graders performing an opera that they wrote about tide pools (cross curriculum focus). Debby Deal announced her resignation from the Arts Commission. She will be moving to Alaska to be closer to family. Debby shared her appreciation for the commission, the experience and for the friendships formed. Commission members and staff thanked her for her passion for the arts and advocacy over the past years that she has served.
