RESOLUTION NO. 2 6 7 3

3 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUBURN,
WASHINGTON, SUPPORTING THE CAMPAIGN TO KEEP THE USS MISSOURI
4 IN KITSAP COUNTY.

WHEREAS, the USS Missouri is an historic maritime
6
battleship having hosted the site of the surrender by the
7
Japanese to the Allied forces, September 2 , 1945; and
8
WHEREAS, the USS Missouri has become an integral part of
9
the Bremerton and Puget Sound Region during its many years
10
moored in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard; and
11
WHEREAS, thousands of Puget Sound area citizens either
12
served aboard the USS Missouri or worked aboard the ship
13
during maintenance and repair, in both wartime and peacetime;
14
and
15
WHEREAS, the USS Missouri has become a major tourist
16
attraction for Puget Sound and stands as a proud symbol of
17
this region' s role in the world-wide peacekeeping efforts; and
18
WHEREAS, the USS Missouri has now been put on the
19
inactive roll by the Department of Defense with the ultimate
20
goal of relocating the ship from the Puget Sound Naval
21
Shipyard to a community that will embrace its national
22
historic value for its transformation into an historic museum;

and

1 WHEREAS, the City of Auburn supports tourism and economic
2 development, and the USS Missouri will serve as a strong
3 economic and cultural accompaniment to this vision; and
4 WHEREAS, the City of Auburn is an ardent advocate of
5 efforts that enrich this region' s naval heritage and sense of
6 cohesion, which is embodied by the USS Missouri; and
7 NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUBURN,
8 WASHINGTON, IN A REGULAR MEETING DULY ASSEMBLED, HEREWITH
9 RESOLVES THAT
10 Section 1. The City of Auburn, in passing this
11 Resolution, supports the campaign to keep the USS Missouri in
12 Bremerton, Washington
13 Section 2 . The Mayor is hereby authorized to implement
14 such administrative procedures as may be necessary to carry
15 out the directives of this legislation
