HomeMy WebLinkAbout07-10-2012 (2)Parks and Recreation Board Meeting Minutes Tuesday, July 10, 2012 5:30 p.m. Auburn Senior Activity Center, Rotary Room Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 5:30 pm by Michael Hassen. Those attending in addition to Mr. Hassen were Vicki Gilthvedt, Greg Dobbs, Richard Artura and David Domenowske. Department staff present were Parks Director Daryl Faber and Parks Secretary Julie Mehl. II. Minutes The minutes of the May meeting were motioned for approval by Greg Dobbs, seconded by Vicki Gilthvedt. III. Committee Member Input Greg Dobbs mentioned an area up at Lakeland that needs to be updated /improved. Daryl will look into. Vicki Gilthvedt saw an outdoor concrete ping pong table in a magazine and would love to see a table at one of our parks. Daryl noted they can double as a picnic table, the only downside is they are not portable. Daryl also shared there is a local group working on getting a ping pong team together, hopefully they could compete with the YMCA ping pong team. Greg Dobbs brought invitations to the Kiwanis Service Club Challenge Team Trivia, to be held Thursday, July 26 from 6:30 — 8:30 pm at the Truitt Building. $35 per team register at kiwanisteamtriviaCa)amail.com or mail to PO Box 856, Auburn, 98071. IV. Correspondence /Public Input Vicki Gilthvedt has a patient who had a lot of positive comments about the Les Gove Campus. V. Old Business VI. New Business VII. Department Report Director Faber shared that there have been some complaints regarding Fulmer field. The Police Department has been patrolling the area more often as there have been a lot of alcohol related garbage left behind by park users. They are also patrolling Isaac Evans more often as there have been issues there as well. The 4 t" of July Festival was very successful this year, there was a very large turn out. Piano's on Parade — there will be four piano's placed throughout downtown which will be painted by local artists. The City received a grant for this fun project from 4culture. Park Board Manual / Policies — The Parks Department Managers are meeting each Wednesday to update the policies. Items added include spray park rules, skate park rules and off leash area rules. For any non department classes held in our parks such as Boot Camp, the group would need to get a permit from the Auburn Parks Dept. Smoking in parks — A survey was done a few years ago regarding smoking in parks, most citizens were strongly against it. City Council supported a non smoking policy but would not categorize it as an infraction as it would not be enforceable. Over the past three years, 20 major cities in the area have made their parks "smoke free ". Upcoming events: Artrageous, August 4, will be held downtown this year and includes a beer garden. Soundbites at City Hall plaza Fridays in July at noon; Summer Sounds & Cinema, August 3, 10 & 17 at local parks; Mary Olson Farm week -end hours noon to 5:00 pm include a new crushed asphalt walkway; Kids Summerstage held Wednesdays at Les Gove park at noon through August 15. Daryl happily announces that Mike Miller will be returning part time on Tuesday, July 17. VIII. Adjournment A. The meeting was adjourned at 6:15 pm.
