III. Market Manager Report — Joanne Macnab
Currently have 34 vendors for 2012
15 — Farmers
12 — Craft
5 — Processed foods
2 — Prepared foods
12 — Non profit
A. The Soroptimist Club sponsored the market this year in the amount of $500.
They sponsored $250 last year.
B. Joanne spoke on May 2nd at the Auburn Department of Health WIC office. In
2012, the FMNP will begin on July 1, 2012. This is a month later than last year
and they will be operating with 40% less funding. The WIC FMNP checks that
were $2.00 will now be $5.00 and will be pink. The Senior FMNP checks that
were $2.00 will be $4.00 and will now be orange. WIC and Healthpoint will be at
the market only once this season, July 22. A lot of WIC checks go unspent at
markets, the thought is that WIC clients are not aware of what fruits and
vegetables are eligible and they are uneducated in the use of some of these
foods. In an effort to educate the WIC client, I plan to have recipes at the WIC
booth using FMNP eligible foods that show clients what meals can be made from
the eligible foods found at the market that day.
C. Posters are going up throughout town and 10,000 book markers are in
D. Our five fence line banners are up. Our 38 x 6 banner was put on the south
side of the transit center parking garage on May 14th and we have a banner on
the north side of the Auburn Way rail bridge that will stay up until June 11th By
Tuesday, May 29th the two sided banner will be up on Main Street, also
remaining until June 11.
E. We will soon be listed in the "In the Spotlight" section on the City of Auburn
website and I have put in a Multimedia service request for video of our market to
be taken on opening day. The current video that runs on channel 21 is from
2009.
F. We submitted a grant to the USDA on May 17th in the amount of $30,000 for
marketing and demonstrations for the 2013 market season. Our grant has been
received and validated by grants.gov and is being prepared for grantor agency
retreival.
G. Hoodies for volunteers and t- shirts for the AHS poster program students are
in. Volunteers will receive their hoodie at the next meeting which is scheduled for
May 31St
H. The AHS students participating in the poster program will receive their
Certificates of Appreciation and their t- shirts when I pick up the entries for our
2013 season. I committed to proofing the art entries this year to take some of the
burden off of Mrs. Sarr and our Multimedia Department. The artwork should be
ready for proofing on June 1St. We have 22 entries this year.
1. We are still waiting on the signed lease agreement with Sound Transit. It's
been routed for signature and we're currently waiting for Sound Transit to return
it. We did receive our Right of Way Use Permit from the City. New signage has
been ordered for the Kiss & Ride parking lot. Facilities and Planning are
checking on the signage status.
J. We will have an article appearing in the next Lakeland newsletter and I
committed to advertise in the NW Coffee News. This year we're getting 17
weeks of advertising for the 15 weeks we paid for last year. We distributed
approximately 9,000 flyers (advertising our Kids Day) to the elementary schools
in the Auburn School District. We will have the banner on the front page of the
Auburn Reporter for the entire market season. Our banner ads for the month of
June have been designed.
K. We received 300 shopping bags as a sponsorship from Muckleshoot Bingo. I
want to hand out 100 on opening day and save the remaining 200 for special
events on additional market days.
L. We received a hand made quilt from the Evergreen Piece Makers Quilting
organization. This quilt was custom made for our market and was donated for us
to do with as we see fit.
2
M. We ordered a set of soft oil pastels on a recommendation from the
Artrageous chalk artist that will be at the market on opening day. This chalk was
expensive, but should alleviate the need to re -chalk the booth stalls between rain
showers. The price was $28 for 18 small sticks, but should last one season.
N. Currently we have 30 vendors and 8 Auburn based organizations, non - profits
and artists registered for opening day for a total of 38. In 2011 we had 29
vendors and 3 non profits on opening day for a total of 32.
IV. Council report — Bill Peloza
A. Waste Management has not gotten back with Bill regarding the stove unit.
They are considering but Bill is hoping to take the request somewhere else.
Laura at Waste Management will review on Tuesday.
B. Homemade doggie cupcake vendor "Nahla" has been distributing coupons
which promise "Come to the Auburn International Farmer's Market and get six
free cupcakes ".
C. Bill Peloza recommends if a board member does not attend a meeting, it be
reflected in the minutes.
V. Correspondence /Public Input
VI. Old Business
A. We will not be replacing the metal fencing near train tracks with plastic
fencing because the plastic is too light weight.
B. Linda asked about Ciscoe Morris and confirmed his date as July 22. She has
offered to write the press release.
C. Trudy confirmed the Kiwanis mailer will have our opening day information &
logo.

information on their reader boards.

VII. Board Recommendations /Input

B. Christian asked who is responsible for gardening /landscaping at the Sound
Transit Station. Joanne has requested maintenance and power washing be
completed before market opening, Bill will follow up. Nancy (Sound Transit) will
put a 360 on flower beds.
C. Maggie suggested we buy a banner with flags from different countries and
string it across the clock tower stage. She said you could buy a banner and
select 20 different flags for $100.
