CALL TO ORDER The Human Services Committee Meeting was called to order at Noon on Monday, October 22, 2012 at One Main Street, Auburn, WA. Committee Members present: JoAnne Walters,Jason Berry, Barbara Derda and Bette Van Gasken Committee Members not present: Daryl Thompson, Chuck Booth, Michael Harbin, Suzanne Limric, Tony Ladner and Lela Brugger Staff present: Advisor to the Mayor Michael Hursh, Human Services Specialist Kirsten Reynolds and Parks Arts&Recreation Director Daryl Faber Guests present: YMCA Teen Programs Eddie Joseph II. AGENDA • 2012 Summer Programming at Olympic Middle School City of Auburn Parks Arts & Recreation Director Daryl Faber, recapped how the "Get Up & Get Out" Summer Drop-in Profit ram at Olympic Middle School went last summer The program was run between July 9 h —August 24th, the programming focused on all grades (K-12) The program was sponsored by the City of Auburn and the Auburn School District. There were 45-50 kids attending per a day, approximately 250 for the program year • Activities included, but were not limited to, sports, Wii, movies and crafts Staffing included a tota I of four individuals, including one who spoke fluent Spanish City of Auburn staff, Michael Hursh, Advisor to the Mayor, announced the future goal is to involve all four middle schools for this type of programming • 2012 Summer Programming at Cascade Middle School Eddie Joseph from the Auburn YMCA Teen Program recapped how their Summer Drop-in Program went at Cascade Middle School The YMCA's program focused on youth aged 6-9 years old Some of their activities included field trips to Wild Waves and Experience Music Project and other fun activities on site They had a great turn out. • Diversity Roundtable Update Advisor to the Mayor Michael Hursh talked about the potential of the Human Services Committee becoming a support for the informal Diversity Roundtable Group A few years ago the City hired two diversity consultants, whom identified several diverse populations in the community and suggested there be an on-going forum for interactions Mr Hursh explained Diana Johnson, City of Auburn Community Diversity Assistant, is in the role of coordinating meetings, however, Mr Hursh asked the question, how can the Human Services Committee become the core supporting committee? This topic will be discussed further in the future • Faith Community Partnership Mr Hursh, Advisor to the Mayor, updated the Committee on the Pastors Group meetings City of Auburn Mayor Pete Lewis and Mr Hursh meet with the Pastors Group three times a• year The goal of this meeting is to enrich the value of each other partnership • 2013 Annual Action Plan Update Mr Hursh, Advisor to the Mayor, presented the 2013 Annual Action Plan to the Committee Each year the Action Plan is submitted to HUD with the Human Services Committee's recommendations for agency funding The Plan is put through the public hearing process and is open for public comments The City of Auburn's Community Development Block Grant funding went to very few capital projects, one, to Wesley Homes for a skilled nursing facility and the other to Valley Cities Counseling & Consultation for a supported housing project. Both proposals serve low- income Auburn residents III. NEXT MEETING: November 26, 2012 IV.
