I. CALL TO ORDER
The Human Services Committee Meeting was called to order at 4pm on Monday, November 26, 2012
at One Main Street, Auburn, WA.
Committee Members present: JoAnne Walters,Jason Berry, Barbara Derda, Bette Van Gasken, Daryl Thompson
Chuck Booth and Tony Ladner
Committee Members not present: Michael Harbin, Suzanne Limric and Lela Brugger
Staff present: Advisor to the Mayor Michael Hursh, Human Services Specialist Kirsten Reynolds and
Planning&Development Director Kevin Snyder
II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
• Review of October 22, 2012 minutes
o Mr Hursh motioned to have the Committee accept the October 22, 2012
minutes, Member Ladner seconded the motion All Committee Members
were in favor of adopting the minutes as submitted
■ The October 22, 2012 minutes were approved
III. AGENDA
• Planning & Development Department Introduction
Advisor to the Mayor Michael Hursh introduced Planning Director Kevin Snyder The
Planning & Development Department supports the following services, Code Enforcement,
permitting, licenses, long-range planning, environmental services, building inspections and
most recently added the Community Services Division
Mr Snyder explained the department is in charge of staffing Council Committee Planning
& Community Development (PCDC), this is the Human Services Committee direct
connection to city policy All recommendations made by the Human Services Committee
get sent and reviewed by PCDC
The Planning Department has been leading a valiant effort to diminish slum properties and
support at risk and/or vulnerable populations via the Housing Repair Program Staff is
constantly revising policy around how to best address these issues
• One Stop in Les Gove Campus
Advisor to the Mayor Michael Hursh and Planning Director Kevin Snyder has been working
in connection with the Parks Department and Mayor Lewis to develop what having a One
Stop would mean Many discussions have taken place around what a "central park" looks
like and the importance of understanding what that represents
Mr Hursh recapped to the Committee that the Activity Center split away from the
Community Center design and has since been completed The second phase is to plan
• and fundraise for both the Community Center and the One Stop Center; these projects are
not in competition for funding and are being handled separately The investment in the
area is approximately $100 million within a 15 year timeline, some of these activities
include
■ $10 million remodel of 60 residential units owned and operated by King
County Housing Authority
■ $22 million road construction project on "M" Street
■ $3 million Street rehab project happening just north of Lew Gove Park (City's
SOS Program)
■ $4 million Parks Activity Center
■ $6 million King County Library renovation
IV. ANNOUNCEMENTS
• 2012 South King County Housing Opportunity Tours
Hosted by the Housing Development Consortium of King County, one of four tours to be
held at Valley Cities Landing in Auburn on Thursday, December 6th 8-10am
• December 24, 2012 meeting canceled
