Folks dould also be required W have had all their vaainations in order to use the dog parks. DaryF agrees ttiat could be a possibility. V. Old Business (Faber) Director Faberhas attended meetings with a Vletnamese group and an American group who are interested in establishing a memorial at Veteran's Memorial Park to recagnize the cooperation between American and Vietnamese troops who fnught side by side In the Vietnam war, If we can reach a concensus between the local American Legion, VFW, Vietnamese community, and friends of the existing memorial the project can move forward. It will then go through committees&counciL The project is being funded by the Vietnam communfty, mostly out of Seattle. Some of the issues were the height ot the flags vs. existing memorial and the language on the sign, The memorial was proposed to go in Olympia but hit a couple hiaups and now have moved to Auburn as we are known for our veterans ' service4 and support of veterans. Director Faber believes hIs role is to make sure:the memorial works well in the park for this great group of people. Kirig County City Health Profile handout—This data reviews the demographlcs and how they affect the health in each community. Ourgoal is to create programs by estabiishing trails to encourage healthy recreation. There is funding available through the Johnson foundation and others. The King County cities evaluated were Aubum, Puyallup, Kent,Tukwila and perhaps Burien &SeaTac. Some of the areas reviewed indude kids fitness, teen pregnancy and encou2ges the creaEion of healthy Ilfestyles through fun and games. There is some great demographic infortnation.induding Aubum vs. the King County norm. It was surprising to see obesity and hypertension inAubum is 5% above the norm. There isa sectlon which renks 25 dUes from worst to best and in Aubum diabetes ranks #1 and coronary heart attack ranks #2. There are a lot of health topia whereAubum ranks towards the worst end of the spectrum. We are planning to create programs with grant doliars extending trails and offering healthier snacks at summer camps. The Aubum teen pregnan.cy rate is very high so we wuld ufilize our Teen Programs and include healthy choices and more education along with the fun and games. There is data for North Aubum and South Aubum included in the report. Rerrton is hosting a fair where agencies can bring in healthy wellness vendors Including providers, litispitals, REI and have a resource fair to exchange information. The municipalities can then take the information end share/support withfn the community. In the past the Johnson Foundation granted us funds to use for smoking osation programs and we went to all the middle schools in town and spent 50 minutes in each dass educating about the heaith effecls of smoking. Brannan Park—We have received funding to replace the playground equipment and will gear it towarcls 3 —7 year olds so they have a place to play whtle otder siblings are playing basebali or fast pitch. We will also make turF improvements. We w(il be losing 3 acres of park land at Brannan with the Reddingbon Levy project but wiil pick it up in the North. This would be a great sfte for a dog park. Greg Dobbs asked a6out the river property transfer and Daryl responded it is still in prooess. The lake property purchase is complete. Grant updates—King Conservation District has grented the City$20,000 for marketing and publidty. We won a King County Youth Sports grant for$60,000 for a synthedc soccer field at Lea Hill Park, this is in addition to 1.5 million we received from King County. A city applied for a $20,000 Kaboom grant and did nothave a match so Kaboom asked us if we waMed to apply, and we reoeived the$20,000 for the Lea Hill Park, which will bemplete in]une. We hope to apply fora $75,000 KCYS grant next year for ball field lighting. Last year we used a grant to improve the Game Fartn Park Tennis Courts, they look fantastic and are getting a lot of use. Greg Dobbs asked about the elevated area towards the.West at Sunset Park. Daryl states it wouid have to be something that oould be programmed and used such as courts or diamonds.. Auburndale Park—Needs to be master planned, Director Faber would like to add a dog park or 9 hoie beginner disc goif course. We may need to take a park tour tfiere to aid in decision making. The disc golf link is the most heavily hit link on the City website, iYs tremendousty popular and almost at a leyel where we should charge$2.00 per person. At times discgolf interferes with other park users because it is so heavily used. Parking would be an issue at Auburndale, ft issparse. Greg Dobhs asks if the Soth end of Rcegner park might work, Daryl states we need to make sure fYs going to worklong term before we commit. VI. New Business VlI.
