Tuesday, April 2, 2013 Meeting Minutes
Present: Nancy Colson, Nickole Evans -Buck, Patricia Judd, Colleen Maloney, Leslie Moore,Dan Norman,
Ronie Schwend, Greg Watson, Laura Westergard, Arts Coordinator Maija McKnight, Arts and Events
Manager Julie Brewer. Excused: Cary Davidson, Heidi Harris, DeNae McGee,
Guests: Lee Valenta, Auburn Symphony Orchestra
I. Call to Order, Approval of Minutes, Introductions and Approval of Minutes:
Chair Ronie Schwend called the meeting to order at 4:30 pm. Commissioner Watson moved to approve
the March 2013 meeting minutes. Commissioner Evans -Buck seconded the motion. All approved.
Motion approved.
II. Auburn Symphony Orchestra
Maija McKnight introduced Lee Valenta, Executive Director of the Auburn Symphony Orchestra. Lee
Valenta provided a brief history of the Symphony and explained that the organization is entering its 16th
year as a professional symphony. Annual programming includes quarterly performances of the full
orchestra as well as quarterly Chamber Ensembles throughout the year. New programming this year
includes outdoor summer concerts at Mary Olson Farm. Discussion continued.
III. BRAVO Performing Arts Season 2013 -14
Staff Maija McKnight outlined the history of the BRAVO series and where it is today with the addition of
the Auburn Avenue Theater programming. In 2009 -10 the BRAVO Performing Arts Season was defined
by the larger performances that took place at the Performing Arts Center. For the 2010 -11 Season,
Auburn Avenue programming was folded into the marketing and the season changed from offering 5 -7
performances to over 50 performances. For the 2013 -14 Season the quality programming will continue
and include large scale big -band performances, Chinese acrobats, BYU Singers, and a large scale
children's music performance. Looking forward towards the 2014 -15 Performing Arts Season, the Auburn
Performing Arts Center will be closed for renovation. This closure provides the opportunity to offer
programming at various other venues, potentially including Auburn Riverside and Mountain View High
School Theater spaces. Commissioner Nickole Evans Buck mentioned that the Muckleshoot School had
a very nice Auditorium that may be a good fit and mentioned the importance of reaching out into different
communities. Suggestions of performers were solicited from the commission and various suggestions
were provided to staff to explore. Discussion Continued.
IV. Updates and Upcoming Events
Staff Maija McKnight provided a verbal listing of upcoming events and important dates.

• April 11 — Auburn Valley Creative Arts Gallery Opening at City Hall
• April 12 — Comedy at Auburn Avenue Theater
• April 13 — Johnny Cash Performance at the Auburn Aveune Theater
• April 14 — Walk the Line Movie at the Auburn Avenue Theater
• April 19/20/21 — Mulan Jr. Theater Camp Performances
• April 26/27 — Forbidden Broadway at Auburn Avenue Theater
Community
• April 23 — Nihon WA Opening at White River Valley Museum
• April 26 — Empty Bowls event at Grace Community Church
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 5:55 pm
