CALL TO ORDER The Human Services Committee Meeting was called to order at 4pm on Monday, April 22, 2013 at One Main Street, Auburn, WA. Committee Members nresent: AJ Vaughs, Barbara Derda,Bette Van Gasken, Chuck Booth, Daryl Thompson,and Lela Brugger Committee'Membersnot oresent: Michael Harbin,Suzanne Cimric,JoAnne Walters,Jason Berty,Robb Wilcox, and Tony Ladner Staff oreseM: Advisor to the Mayor Michael Hursh, Human Services Speciafist IGrsten Reynnids, Senior Ctr.Supervisor Radine Lozier,and Parks,Arts&RecreaUon Director Daryl Faber II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES o Rediew of Febrqary 25, 2013 and March 26, 2013 minutes o Member Booth motibned to accept the February 25, 2013 and March 25, 2013 minutes; Member Derda seconded the motion. All Committee Members were in favor of adopting the minutesas submitted. ■ The February 25, 2013 and March 25, 2013 minutes were approved. III. AGENDA • Summer Programming Advisor to the Mayor Michael Hursh opened the discussion calling this year's summer programming "expanded" services; the city alvirays offers summer programming, but the Olympic Middle School and Cascade Middle School programs offer free activities to the entire neighborhood, keeping kids engaged with positive activities throughout the summer: Parks, Arts & Recreation Directo� Daryl Faber described the prograrris offered at these two middle schools are made possible thirough great partnerships with tFie Aubu"m School DisVict, the YMCA and City of Aubum. At the Olympic site, City of Aubum Parks staff operates the programming and tar�ets activities for younger kids; at Cascade, YMCA staff operates prbgramming, ta�geting 8 h and 9th graders. The Auburn School District takes care of food needs for both sites. The specialty camp offered at,Olympic Middle School is called GET UP! GETOUT.i Activities are offered daily between July 8"'through August 23rtl. Operation days/times are Monday— Friday, 11 a.m. — 5 p.m. Youth are encouraged to participate in a variety of sports, water play, arts& crafts and a daily lunch. Individuals-and/orgroups interested in volunteering should contactShe Parks Department to coordinate. Mr. Faber talked to the Human Services Committee about many other"pay to play" programs the City of Aubum Parks Department has to offer this summer.. Mr. Faber encouraged committee members to get this information out in the community. Brbchures were available listing all the programs and activities for summer 2013. • Latino Community Conversation Event Mr..Flursh 4alked about the City of Aubum's continued and intenfional support for diversity services offered. This is the second in an on-going series of Cultural Communiiy Conversation events. 3taff has planned these events with the fielp of tfie c"ommunity. The City of Aubum along with other key partners will host a Latino Community Conversation on July 18, 2013 at the Aubum Senior Center. Community members will be invited to discuss public safety concerns, public health issues,school safety concems and learn about available commun'ity resources. The meeting format will have a panel of representatives including: the Aubum School District; Aubum Police, City of Aubum Mayor, Planning Deparhnent, and Parks, Arts & Recreation Department. The meeting will be translated in Spanish. • Human Service Agency Visits Human Services Specialist Kirsten Reynolds reviewed committee members roles as Team Lead (Member Barbara Derda, Member JoAnne Walters, Member Robb Wilcox, and Member Bette Van Gasken are Team Leads). The Team Leads will take on the main role of contacting the agency to set up visits. Staff will provide the contact information, introduction and tools to perform the visit. During" the visit committee members will get an opportunity to meet the agency staff, see operations and ask detailed questions a6out the programs.. IV.
