The meeting was called to order by Mayor Shaughnessy. . Councilmen present : Aaby, Lea, Kammeyer, Fitzsimmons, Sonnemann, Towner, and Gaines. � Gaines reported that no 6ighted crosswalk sign was. to be placed i.n front of the Washington Grade School , and with this' 'correction the .minutes of the previous meeting held December 5, 19 1 were approved as mailed. PUBLIC HEARING ' The Mayor announced the public hearing on the Comprehensive Street Program for the City of Auburn. It was moved by Kammeyer and seconded by Lea that the Public Hearing on the; Comprehensive Street Program for the City of Au6urn be closed, and the City Attorney be instructed to draft necessary for .same. MOTION CARRIED BIDS None CORRESPONDENCE A claim in the amount of $ 15,378.00 for alleged injuries and expenses suffered by Charles Oskers when he fell in a city croas- walk October 22, 1961 , was read. Oskers ' attorney, Ernie Crane, was present and stated same had been duly filed with the city cierk. This matter was turned over to the Insurance Company RE�UEST FOR LIGHT A letter from Don Rottle was read requesting the instaliation ' of a liqht on 5th street Northeast. This request was turned over to Councilman Gaines. LAWRENCE 'uV. BENSON RETIREMENT A letter from Statewide City Employees Retirement System asked if any action was to be taken to extend the retirement date of Lawrence W. Benson. . Benson intends to continue as superintenden.t for the park department to �ebruary, and then work part time until the Ist of June. It was rtioved by Aaby and seconded by Gaines that the retire- ment date of Lawrence Benson be extended for the above period of time. , • ' MOTIGN CARRIED AUBURN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE A letter received from the Auburn Chamber of Commerce , requested the City to authorize the issuance of a parking pass to tiie m�nbers of the Western Farmers Associaticn who wifl be in Auburn for a matter of 6 hours on December 27, 1961 ; to attend their annual district meeting. � It was moved by Fitzsimmons and seconded by Aaby that the revuest of the Chamber of Commerce be granted. MOTION CARRIED REQUEST FOR TRAFFIC SIGNAL A letter was received .,from Mrs. Montie Lawrence' requesting tF,e installstion of a traffic. signal at the intersection of Fourth Stree.t and C Street. Schuler was asked to write a letter to the state in regard to this request. RUmIENCE Bill Morton, Engi,neer requested more information on the job openirg for City Engineer. Page 2421 AUBURN WASHINGTON TUESDAY DECEMBER -19 1961 Fi NANCE• It was moved by Flaby and seconded' by Gaines that Don Walker Window Cleaners be awarded the bid `or janitoc service for the year 1962, and that a separate contract be drawn up to furnish the ' Ci'ty with towels for $5 a month, with the following roll call vote being recocded: Aaby, yes; Lea, yes ; Kammeyer, yes; Fitzsimmons, yes; Sonnemann, yes; Towner, yes; and 6aines, yes. , N�OTION CARRIED FIRE ' It was moved by Tor�ner and seconded by Gaines that the property oo-mers in the area requesting annexation be given permission to circulate a petition for annexation into Auburn. � MOTIQN CARRIED LICENSE It was moved by Fitzsimmons and seconded by Gaines that upon payment of fee a caboret license be granted George R. Ellen and Allan F. Milier co-owners of Ferguson 's Tavern . , MOTION CARRIED Fitzsimmons reported the Ordinance on Fire Works would be held over unti :P next meeting pending further investigation. Elmer Stodd representative of the American Legion requested that a decision be made on this Ordinance as they had much work to do to organize a sales stand. He stated that if the Ordinance was not passed, the orcanization would go to the County for permission to sell fire works outside the City. Fitzsimmons indicated the Council would probably be ready to ' make a decision by the �irst meeting in January. STREET No Report � WATER It was moved by Kammeyer and seconded by Aaby that Van 4laters & Rogers be awarded the bid for Liauid Chiorine for 1962. NOTION CARRIED It was moved by Kammeyer and seconded tiy Sonnemann that the City Clerk call for sealed bids for furnishing a truck for the Water Department, bids to be opened at 8 :OOP;M. Tuesday January 2, 1962, and that the City Clerk be instructed to notify all local dealers. OLD BUSINESS • Kammeyer reocrted that a signed option had been_! mailed to the Federal Aviation Agency,, as requested at the last council meeting. ' NtW BUSINESS It was moved by Sonnemann and seconded by Kammeyer that the City of Auburn elect to come under the provision of Chapter 5 of the Justice Court „ct; Chap. 299 of the Laws of the State of �Vashington for year. l961 , and the City Clerk be directed to file the necessary petition with the County Commissioners. MOTION CARRIED It was moved by Sonnemann and seconded by Fitzsimmons that the Mayor and the City Clerk be directed to sign the Mutual Civil �,,,�y ,�s Service Aid Agreement with officiafs of other cities in the country in order to qualify for govermment aid. - MOTION CARRIED It was moved by Gaines and seconded by Towner that the appointment of Ed Cavanaugh .as Civil Defense Director for the cit:y be approved.
