Tuesday, October 1, 2013 Meeting Minutes
Present: Patricia Judd, DeNae McGee, Dan Norman Ronie Schwend, Laura Westergard, Greg Watson,

I. Call to Order, Approval of Minutes, Introductions and Approval of Minutes:
Chair Ronie Schwend called the meeting to order at 5 pm. September minutes were not approved as
quorum was not reached.
II. Public Art
Maija McKnight reported that The Long Look by Brad Rude was reinstalled at Centennial Park on Friday,
September 13. The artwork was re -sited to be more visible from the road, a camera and motion sensitive
light have been installed, and additional internal structures to the sculpture have been added as additional
security measures. An overview of the press received on this event was provided and Commission
discussed the artwork as a very important part of the public art collection.
The Lea Hill Park will have a dedication and opening celebration Thursday, October 30 at 4 pm. The
artwork "Strawberry Calf' by Michael McLaughlin will be unveiled at that time.
The Downtown Sculpture Gallery artwork will be changing throughout the 2nd week of October. The
pedestal location at Auburn Ave and Main Street will not have artwork on the base, as construction will
begin in the next few months of that area. A contract for the purchase of Riparian Totem by Lin
McJunkin has been created, and are looking towards Winter /Spring to install it at the agreed upon
location. A public art committee meeting will be scheduled to discuss the potential 2014 public art
projects and locations. Council member Wagner noted interest to consider the parking lot area near the
Auburn Library.
III. Arts Education
ArtRageous Zones were part of the summer festivals and events offering hands -on activities to attendees.
Events in which an ArtRageous Art Zone included: Petpalooza, Kids Day, International Festival, Farmers
Market, Kids Summer Stage, and Summer Sounds and Cinema. The audience reach was huge and the
response was overwhelmingly positive.
Classes, workshops and artist professional development trainings are being re- initiated by the Cultural
Arts division. A flyer has been created that lists all the upcoming gallery displays as well as classes.
Opera in Schools is a partnership with the City of Auburn that brings in- school residencies and
performances to the schools within the Auburn School District. In previous years one - school participated
in a week -long residency program that resulted in a assembly presentation. This year funding will be
offered to schools that sign up for an assembly and will be offered additional funding to cover the cost of
classroom site visits in preparation for the assembly.
IV. Updates /Upcoming Events
• Thursday, November 10, 5:30 — 7pm Artists Reception at City Hall Gallery
• Call for Artists for 2014 Gallery Season is currently being circulated and applications will be
reviewed at the next Visual Arts Committee meeting.
• Re- granting application has been posted with deadline of the beginning of December
• October 20, 2:30 pm Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra at the PAC
• October various dates, Young Frankenstein the Musical by Auburn Community Players
Next Visual Art Committee Meeting: Wednesday, October 23, 4 pm at home of Ronie Schwend
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 5:45 pm
