Tuesday, December 17, 2013
2:00 PM
Members Present: Bob Rakos, Arnie Galli. Excused members: Jeanne Coffey, Warren Olson & Greg
Dobbs.
Staff Present: Daryl Faber, Craig Hudson, Julie Mehl
A. Call to Order — The meeting was called to order at 2:00 pm by Arnie Galli.
B. Review of August 2013 Minutes — The August 2013 minutes were moved for approval
by Bob Rakos and seconded by Arnie Galli.
C. Old Business — Craig shared that the development has begun in the new upright section as there
are only three plots remaining in the upper 91" addition. There is a need in the Russian, Ukranian
and Korean communities for upright markers. There will be 25 — 35 plots available in this section.
Stipps Project — There has been a large amount of runoff from the Stipps Project so the City is
planning to have a retention pond constructed. Maintenance & Operations has hauled up some
dirt. The runoff is seasonal and is dry now. Arnie asks if liners will be installed in advance, Craig
replies no, in case customers opt for a vault. Bob Rakos feels the water will be horrific in the future,
Craig says the retention pond needs to be installed as soon as possible.
Holiday Decor — The wreath is up and the trees have been decorated. The `Tree of Remembrance'
is up. It's nice to see folks we've worked with in the past.
Water discussion — the water bill paid to Lakehaven Utility District is roughly $30,000 per year. The
board discussed some ideas regarding irrigation in the future including a monster pump to pump
water up the hill. There is a capped off well located near the mobile home that should be checked.
It was capped off years ago because it never hit water. If there is a way to irrigate without using
Lakehaven water, it would save a substantial amount of money. Some cemeteries will post signs
"not potable water ".
D. New Business
Request for Proposals — Parks Director Daryl Faber shares there has been a request for proposals
submitted on the City website as a test balloon for maintenance of the cemetery. Daryl feels that
Craig is running a tight ship and the numbers have been looking good. Two years ago the numbers
were down $100,000 but this year they are up $80,000. Hopefully we can get an office assistant as
well as continuing with summer temporary employees.
Phase II — The concrete caps were cracking and the lime was leaking. We have switched to granite
caps to alleviate future issues.
Robert Booth — Robert (cemetery caretaker) had a stroke and is in a care facility, he won't be
returning. A security company that the Parks Department uses is now locking the gates. They
charge $500 per month for the service. The mobile home on the property belongs to Bob, Craig is
not asking his family to do anything at this time. Will need to consider if we want to hire someone in
the future for caretaking.
Cemetery website — The Information Services department is creating a website with our own URL,
separate from the City website. Craig will forward the link to the board, it will be a picture heavy
website. It's long overdue as folks don't look in the phone book as much, they are using the world
wide web.
