Also present at the meeting were Parks Horticulturist Rich Valenti, Environmental Planner Jamie Kelly, Parks Secretary Julie Mehl. Minutes The April 2014 Tree Board minutes were approved unanimously. III. Correspondence /Public Input Board member Marsha Goodwin commented on how well the Parks are maintained and how beautiful they look. IV. Old Business Heritage Tree discussion — Horticulturist Rich Valenti evaluated the Flowering Cherry at the White River Buddhist Temple and does not recommend it for Heritage status, he noticed some conks on the tree. Conks indicate a rot inducing pathogen has taken up residence in the tree, often fungal. Chair Bryce has located a potential Heritage tree, a 70 — 90 year old on 7th SE, a Royal Ann Cherry Tree. V. New Business VI. Board Recommendations /Input Mike Miller suggests we go on a field trip on July 8 to view potential Heritage trees. Rich would like to visit the Soos Creek Botanical Garden if we have time. Bryce and his wife visited the Auburn Environmental Park and commented the Cottonwoods block viewing. He suggests cutting the tops and some limbs, girdle at the base which would make a nice habitat for insects and birds. Perhaps attend a Sunday at the Farmer's Market, maybe on the Sunday that Ciscoe is the special guest. VII. Department Report Parks Horticulturist Richard Valenti reported that some street trees have been removed off Dogwood near the Muckleshoot Casino, the trees were damaging sidewalks. There are some citizens who are upset and an attorney has sent a letter to the City requesting the Arborist report. They were rated a 4 by previous Parks Horticulturist Kirk Hadley, a 4 rating deems trees safe to keep. Chair Bryce Landrud suggests checking with the guidelines the City of Federal Way uses. They have dug up the concrete on 3201h in order to save the trees. Environmental Planner Jamie Kelly said we get a lot of calls from Lakeland citizens because trees are buckling concrete (usually on personal property). The City of Auburn allows folks to remove trees but requires them to re -plant a proper size tree. Jamie will follow up with Joe Welsh, Transportation Planner for guidelines. Jamie shares the developers often plant trees based on availablity vs. what works in the planting area. Horticulturist Rich Valenti states the Daughters of the American Revolution would like to donate cuttings from a Poplar or Washington Elm tree. Rich and Bryce agree the Washington Elm would be preferred. VIII. Adjournment There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 2:45 pm.
