HomeMy WebLinkAbout06-03-2014 (2)City of Auburn Arts Commission, City Hall Annex, One Main, Conference Room 2 Tuesday, June 3, 2014 Meeting Minutes Present: Nancy Colson, Colleen Maloney, DeNae McGee, Laura Westergard, Arts Coordinator, Maija McKnight, Arts and Events Manager Julie Krueger, Arts and Events Assistant Kelsey D'Andrade. Excused: Charlotte Gollnick, Jan Jensen, Dan Norman, Feney Perez, Ronie Schwend, Donna Smart, Greg Watson. Guest, Poet Laureate Dick Brugger Call to Order, Approval of Minutes, Introductions and Approval of Minutes: Chair Colleen called the meeting to order at 4:35 pm. May minutes were not approved as quorum was not reached. II. Auburn Poet Laureate The commission welcomed current Poet Laureate, Dick Brugger and staff provided a quick overview of all the programs and initiatives that Dick has been involved with over the past three years within this honorary position. Staff noted that his term would be coming to a close at the end of 2014 and would be seeking a new Poet Laureate. The nomination materials and selection process were reviewed and discussion continued. Additionally, commissioners discussed ways to recognize and celebrate Dick Brugger's term and the commission discussed a potential public event. III. Temporary Public Art Staff McKnight provided an update on the multiple upcoming temporary public art projects occurring. The Downtown Sculpture Gallery call is currently live and applications will be due on July 21, 2014. The Arts Commission August meeting will be dedicated to the review and selection of the artwork that will be on display from September 2014 — August 2015 in downtown Auburn. Pianos on Parade artist deadline is in early June and the Visual Art Committee will select five artists to "artistically" modify pianos that will then be placed throughout town. Staff is currently seeking additional pianos via donation or small fee. Streetscapes Auburn managed a new installation by local artist Zachary Tanner in the administrative windows of the Auburn Avenue Theater. The installation within the One Main windows will be changed at the end of June. IV. Updates /Announcements /Upcoming Events ArtRageous Art Activity Zones are planned throughout the summer and the artists and activities have all been determined through application and selection by the Visual Arts Committee. There were 4 artists at the early May Petpalooza, and will be 5 artists at the June 20 Kids Day event and 1 artists at each of the Kids Summer Stage concerts, the Kids Day at the Auburn International Farmers Market and the Summer Sounds and Cinema at Sunset Park. Auburn Valley Creative Arts has evacuated their previous location on Division Street due to a serious water leak. The building slated to be demolished and no repairs will be done to the building. The community group was able to remove all the artwork without anything being damaged and are currently seeking a new gallery location within downtown Auburn. The July meeting will be cancelled due to summer schedules and lack of quorum. Commissioner Westergard noted that the Auburn Downtown Association event recognizing the City's Birthday will be held on Friday, June 6, 2014. She also noted the upcoming Wine Art Music Festival that will be held this year on Saturday, July 19, 2014. Chair Colleen Maloney reported to the commission the "Imagine Auburn" Vision meeting that was hosted by the Mayor on my 21 st at the Golf Course. There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 5:55 pm Respectfully submitted, Maija McKnight
